WHITEHOUSE STATION, NJ, September 26, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Uchenna Baker, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. A talented administrator, Dr. Baker has served as the vice president of student affairs and the dean of students at Fairleigh Dickinson University since 2021. In addition to overseeing various departments within the division, she is active with student involvement and experiences outside of the classroom for two of Fairleigh Dickinson's New Jersey campuses. Dr. Baker also works closely with senior leadership with regard to the university's strategic goal of further enhancing excellence and collaborates with the student government to assist with various relative study body issues.
Garnering more than 15 years of previous experience in an academic setting, Dr. Baker hails from the University of Puget Sound, where she also served as the vice president of student affairs and dean of students from 2018 to 2021. She also taught on campus as an adjunct faculty in the School of Education. Additionally, Dr. Baker has served as the assistant dean of campus life and director of residential life at Elon University; the associate director of residence life at the University of North Carolina Wilmington; the director of residence life and housing at Utica College; and a resident director on the Cook College campus and residence life coordinator on the Cook/Douglass campus at her alma mater, Rutgers University. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Baker served as a case manager for Coordinated Family Care from 2004 to 2005.
Throughout the course of her professional career, Dr. Baker has taught numerous college courses, including Effective Leadership; Research in Education; and the Science of Effective Leadership, An Ontological and Phenomenological Model. She has also served on a multitude of college committees.
As a respected scholar-practitioner, Dr. Baker has published several books, book chapters, articles and research documents, including "Taking Flight: An Uncommon Journey with an Uncommon Man" in 2018 and "From Surviving to Thriving: An Ontological Journey to Freedom and Self-Expression (In No Ways Tired: The Journey for Professionals of Color in Student Affairs)" in 2019. She also contributed an article in a 2019 edition of the Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice, "Teaching About Cultural Competence and Health Disparities in an Online Graduate Public Health Course." Apart from her writing contributions, Dr. Baker has served as a journal reviewer for the Race and Pedagogy Journal; Teaching and Learning for Justice; and Education in America: Perspectives, Challenges, and Opportunities, and has presented at numerous professional conferences, workshops, and invited talks throughout the country.
Civically, Dr. Baker has been active as a board member for A Step Ahead in Pierce County (ASAPC) since 2020. The ASAPC notably provides early support to infants and toddlers with developmental delays.
Dr. Baker attended Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and sociology in 2002, a Master of Education in counseling psychology in 2004, and a Doctor of Philosophy in educational policy with a focus on urban education in 2015. To further enhance her career, she received several leadership and educational certifications. To remain current in her field, Dr. Baker is a member of the American Educational Research Association, the American College Personnel Association and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
In light of her achievements, Dr. Baker was the recipient of a Regional Award for Residence Life Faculty by the National Residence Hall Honorary in 2012. Among other accolades, she was honored to receive the Illinois Distinguished Qualitative Dissertation Award from the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry in 2016, a Cause in the Matter Award from the Elon University Division of Student Life in 2016, and the 2013 Inclusive Excellence Award from the University of North Carolina Wilmington Office of Inclusion and Diversity Initiatives. Looking toward the future, Dr. Baker envisions making an even greater impact on higher education by becoming a college president, particularly by creating an avenue for students, faculty, and staff to transform the world.
