KAMUELA, HI, October 04, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Robert M. Appleman, MD, FACS, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Appleman celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After more than 35 years as a general surgeon, Dr. Appleman retired from medicine and relocated from Sacramento, California, to Hawaii in 2003 with his wife. Reestablishing himself, he became a watercolor artist. He established a website (ApplemanArt) in 2005 and became a locally known watercolor artist when he created the Kohala Plein Air Watercolor group which he directed until age 80. He became an artist-in-residence at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 2012 after a show of his full sheet orchid watercolors. He has continued in that position to the present giving weekly demonstrations and maintaining a small gallery of paintings in the lobby coffee shop. He gives three hour lessons to a maximum of two students on days other than his assigned Wednesdays to give full attention to the students.
Dr. Appleman maintained a solo general surgery practice from 1965 to 1995 except for his 2 year 6 month tour of military duty 1967-1969. After 1995, he had a part time job with the County of Sacramento as a disability evaluator which allowed him time to pursue his interest in art education at Sacramento and Cosumes River Colleges. This allowed him to work in many branches of the art world, and after trying oil and pastel painting, print making and clay sculpture, he decided upon watercolor as his main choice for a life of art.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Appleman received a Bachelor of Science in pre-medicine in 1957 and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Michigan in 1959. He also completed an internship at Minneapolis General Hospital (now Hennepin County Medical Center) in 1960 and a residency in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1965. Dr. Appleman was drafted into military service at age 33. He chose the Navy with the help of his uncle, a Navy Admiral. To temporarily give up his private practice, he was allowed to take the Navy Flight Surgery program (six months) beginning in January 1967. Military rank depends on the years beyond medical school graduation, so he entered the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Rank also allowed him to choose an aircraft carrier for his tour of duty. He chose the USS Kearsarge, CVS33, in the Pacific, and was senior medical aboard from 1967-1969. During this tour he was promoted to Full Commander, his final USN rank.
In his surgical career he was admitted to the American College of Surgeons and was a Fellow (FACS) until retirement. He joined the Portrait Society of America in 1999 and became the Ambassador to the State of Hawaii for 6 years.
While in residency Dr. Appleman wanted to experience the laboratory science side of his profession away from caring for patients and to obtain a Master of Science degree. He obtained a Public Health Grant in Laboratory Science for his last year in residency, and obtained an MS in Surgery from the University of Minnesota. This experience was very helpful in his decision to care for patients instead of working in the laboratory as his life's work.
Once established in Hawaii Dr. Appleman was very grateful for his art training as it gave him a new and different vocation which has kept him busy and involved. His paintings have graced homes all over the world from Russia and Japan to many European countries including Spain, Germany and Great Britain. He was awarded best watercolor in a Plein Air Show for artists of the island of Hawaii. He continues his enthusiasm for this wonderful vocation and plans to continue at it until he can no longer hold a brush.
