An experienced teacher and life coach whose career has led her to work in various countries throughout the world, Ms. Hoelker is presently an English writing instructor at Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan. Joining the university in 2020, Ms. Hoelker presently teaches Rhetoric and Composition.
Additionally, Ms. Hoelker is a successful life coach who works with individuals continually seeking to sharpen their skills. Ms. Hoelker also coaches college students, recognizing that these individuals are the future of society.
Ms. Hoelker recently concluded her role as an English teacher to speakers of other languages (TESOL) instructor, summer immersion program curriculum committee member and life coach at Wenzhou-Kean University in Wenzhou, China, in 2019 after a three-year commitment. In the field since 1970, her experience has also included teaching English courses while volunteering for the Peace Corps. Additionally, she has taught English to students in South Korea, Japan, Qatar, the Emirates, Rwanda, Mali and India. She has lectured at Qatar University and served as a visiting lecturer at Seoul National University and Pusan National University. Ms. Hoelker gained experience as an English Language Fellow with the U.S. State Department in India and has been responsible for facilitating training with the U.S. Department of State's English Language Specialist Program in Egypt, Oman and Bahrain.
Ms. Hoelker's research has been disseminated in a multitude of peer-reviewed journals and educational publications on such topics as motivation, English as an international language and vocabulary acquisition. She has also served as a reviewer and on the editorial board of several scholarly journals, including the Korea TESOL Journal, and has presented at 95 international conferences in countries such as the U.S., Australia, Japan, Korea and Thailand. Moreover, Ms. Hoelker has been serving as an annual presenter at the TESOL International Association Convention since 1992 and notably served as a guest speaker at the SETRA Convention (China International Teaching and Research Convention) in Nanjing in 2018 and in Beijing in 2019.
After more than 50 years in education, Ms. Hoelker is preparing for retirement. Ms. Hoelker also aims to publish a book. In her free time, Ms. Hoelker volunteers her time as a life coach for other teachers.
Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, Ms. Hoelker received a Bachelor of Arts in French at Gwynedd Mercy University, followed by a Master of Arts in French at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1970. To further her expertise in the field, she attained a Master of Arts in TESOL at the School for International Training in Vermont in 2000. She completed her third master's degree, an interdisciplinary degree in English literature and history at Western New Mexico University.
Ms. Hoelker is an Associate Certified Coach of the International Coaching Federation. She has also served on the TESOL International Board of Directors in Washington, D.C., and is a past president of TESOL Arabia.
