Dr. Rahming is an associate director in the Center for the Advancement of Teaching at Florida State University (FSU). She earned a Doctor of Philosophy in educational leadership and policy studies from FSU in 2019, where she was awarded a dissertation fellowship. Her academic credentials include a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, earned in 2004, and a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, where she graduated magna cum laude in 1997.
At FSU, Dr. Rahming was named a Hardee Fellow in 2015 and a Legacy Fellow in 2014. She also holds additional academic credentials, including graduate certificates from FSU in institutional research, earned in 2017, and in program evaluation, attained in 2016. Moreover, Dr. Rahming holds an active faculty position at FSU at the rank of visiting professor.
Dr. Rahming proudly pursues peripheral appointments in service to graduate students and their research interests. She is a mentorship lead with the Florida A&M University–Florida State University collaborative Gulf Scholars Program. She was also the acting deputy director of research on equity in science, engineering and technology at FSU between 2018 and 2019. Along with experience in elementary and middle school administration and her education in the Bahamas, she has also held roles as a teaching assistant for master's level courses for Outcomes Assessment in Higher Education I between 2017 and 2018, and she was a graduate research assistant in the Center for Postsecondary Success in Tallahassee from 2014 to 2017.
Dr. Rahming has contributed to many peer-reviewed journals with articles such as "The STEM Glass Ceiling: The Influence of Immigration Status on STEM Trajectories of Afro-Caribbean Women," published in the Journal of International Students in 2021. Moreover, she was the co-author of "Basic Needs Insecurity Among Doctoral Students: What it Looks Like and How to Address it," appearing in About Campus in 2020. She proudly presented her doctoral research in a dissertation titled "Black Women in White Coats: Science Identity Construction in Afro-Caribbean Women," a project that earned her a place among finalists for the Dalton Institute Dissertation of the Year Award. Furthermore, Dr. Rahming remains active in the field by accepting invitations to deliver talks related to her independent research and to present as the keynote speaker at association conferences.
Throughout her career, Dr. Rahming has accepted many commendations, including the Latin American-Caribbean Scholarship from FSU in 2014 and the Ben Whitfield Scholarship Fund Award in 2018. She also won the W. Hugh Stickler Award for the Enhancement of Dissertation Research at FSU in 2018, the same year she was an inductee into Omicron Delta Kappa. From 2014 to 2017, Dr. Rahming benefitted from the Dr. Marion Neil Endowed Scholarship at FSU, and she proudly accepted the inaugural Carrie G. Hall Endowed Scholarship, also at FSU, in 2016. Dr. Rahming's superb editorial work has also been recognized by the Excellence in Peer Review Award from the Journal of International Students in 2021 and the Reviewer of the Year Award from the Florida Journal of Educational Research in 2020. Other critical acknowledgments include the Emerging Scholar Award from the Global Studies Conference in Krakow, Poland, in 2019, and the NYU Steinhardt Faculty First Look Scholar commendation from New York University in 2018.
Dr. Rahming actively maintains an academic network via memberships in specific organizations, including the American Educational Research Association, the Southern Sociological Society and the American College Personnel Association. She is also currently a member of the Sisters of the Academy Institute, the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the American Institutes for Research. Various education and evaluation societies are also a priority for Dr. Rahming, and she is an active member of the Southeast Evaluation Association, the National Education Association and the American Evaluation Association.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Rahming aims to persist in doing her part to improve academic, professional and civic circumstances for all. She cites a pervasive curiosity as her main motivation to advance, as well as a desire to always ask questions and identify the best answers. She remains open to multiple resolutions to certain challenges and to assisting women in their quest to pursue the sciences through higher education in the United States.
