MOUNT VERNON, WA, October 07, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Doris Brevoort, PhD, LMT, MHCA, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Brevoort earned a Bachelor of Arts at the State University of New York, Empire State College in 1974, a Bachelor of Arts with Teacher Certification at The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA in 1987, and a Master of Education in School and Family Counseling at the University of Washington in 1991. She earned Principal Certification at Seattle University in 1993. She earned a 'Brain Research in Education' Certificate at University of Washington Extension in 2004. She received a Doctor of Philosophy in Human Science from Saybrook University in 2012. Her dissertation on applications of neuroscience in education and wellness is shared with teachers and counselors as A Teacher's Guide to Neuro-Education. Well qualified in her field, Dr. Brevoort holds a Mental Health Counselor Associate license, and has been a Licensed Massage Therapist in Washington State since 1976.
Dr. Brevoort began her career with Seattle Public Schools in 1991 as an elementary school counselor. She continued as a counselor and special education teacher until her retirement in 2016, and continues to work as a substitute teacher/counselor.
Dr. Brevoort was a co-founder and Licensed Massage Therapist with New Seattle Massage, a cooperatively owned business, beginning in 1981. Since 2002, she has worked as a massage, reflexology, and sound healing practitioner dba Skagit Valley Healing Arts, in Mount Vernon, WA. She is an at-home caregiver for a family member. Dr. Brevoort is the author of Journal of a Trip to Nepal and India and Now Ear This, a guide for using sound in elementary classrooms, and three chapbooks of poetry. She enjoys singing with children and elders.
A dedicated advocate on behalf of her community, Dr. Brevoort served as a member of the Mount Vernon Main Street Design Committee. She founded the Turning Institute, a nonprofit that advocates for family caregiver wellness and education (sponsored through Shunpike.org). She is the originator of the "Caregiver Depletion Cycle" and "Caregiver Renewal Days." Dr. Brevoort serves on the Community Advisory Committee of Skagit Transit and the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Theatre Center Foundation in Mount Vernon. She has served on the Board of Skagit NAMI (National Association for Mental Illness), is a member of AAPB (the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback), the Sierra Club, Green America, and Skagit League of Women Voters.
A self-professed hard worker, Dr. Brevoort is currently writing Bringing Marcia Home, a book that expounds upon her journey as her sister's caregiver. It focuses on aging while living with mental illness, and planning that families can do decades in advance to experience more successful wellness in aging. Looking to the future, Dr. Brevoort plans to continue her advocacy for voters' rights, environmental sustainability, and equity for all students in public education.
