Marquis Who's Who Honors Gerard L. Knieter, EdD, with Inclusion in Who's Who in the World

Dr. Knieter was appointed dean and professor of music in the College of Fine Arts at California State University in Northridge in 1986. Upon retirement in 2006 he was awarded the distinguished title of professor emeritus of music. An influential teacher, interdisciplinarian in the arts and mentor who garnered decades of success in the field, he also taught as adjunct professor of behavioral sciences at Northeastern Ohio University's College of Medicine while he was the dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts and a professor of music at The University of Akron. Dr. Knieter headed the doctoral program and taught music education, psychology, and philosophy at Temple University. He entered higher education at San Jose State University where he chaired the student teaching seminar and conducted the orchestra. Next, he moved to Duquesne University where he was acting dean and taught psychology of music. It was between 1956 and 1962 on Long Island, New York that Dr. Knieter first became known as an interdisciplinarian in the arts by team-teaching a symposium in the creative arts.

Among many accomplishments, Dr. Knieter was instrumental in developing numerous collegiate programs, including the Center for the Arts. He also held various leadership roles on educational committees, namely as the president of the faculty senate and as the co-chair, with the president, of the Commission on the Future of the University and a member of the Educational Policies Committee of the Board of Trustees. Moreover, Dr. Knieter conducted numerous workshops for high school and college teachers to demonstrate teaching and learning in interdisciplinary arts programs.

Devoted to teaching psychology, philosophy, and pedagogy of the arts throughout his career, to demonstrate how they work in conjunction, Dr. Knieter was passionate about developing aesthetic sensitivity-a universal quality of personality. Among a myriad of courses, he notably taught aesthetics, research, and music in world cultures. As a scholar, Dr, Knieter also contributed articles on the subjects of education, psychology, and philosophy in peer-reviewed journals and other periodicals and encyclopedias. Additionally, he served in several editorial roles on behalf of the Journal of Research in Music Education, the Journal of Aesthetic Education, and the Music Educators Journal.

Outside of teaching, Dr. Knieter further enhanced his career as a management and arts consultant for Human Resources Unlimited Inc. in Valencia, California. He also served on the board of directors for the National Center for Research in Arts Education at New York University (NYU) and for the Theodore Presser Company in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

Applying his expertise throughout the community, Dr. Knieter was a participant at the Tanglewood Symposium and chaired the committee for the Advancement of Music Education. He also served as the vice president of the board of directors for the Initial Teaching Alphabet Foundation and was active on the San Fernando Valley regional council of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County. Additionally, Dr. Knieter has been named to The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, which is recognized as the highest honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky, for his contributions to his local community.

Dr. Knieter served his country in the U.S. Army while teaching at the Naval School of Music, in Anacostia, Washington, D.C. where he was teacher of advanced theory and wrote the curriculum for the warrant officers program. He subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1953 and a Master of Arts in Music Education, with an emphasis in higher education, in 1954 at NYU, followed by a Doctor of Education in Music Education with an emphasis in psychology and teacher education at Teachers College, Columbia University in 1961.

To further ensure his place at the forefront of his profession, Dr. Knieter maintained affiliation with numerous prominent organizations. Among them, he has been aligned with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Association of Higher Education, the Society for Ethnomusicology, the Music Educators National Conference (now the National Association for Music Education), and the International Council of Fine Arts Deans.

In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Knieter has been the recipient of several accolades, including being featured in professional publications such as the International Who's Who in Music and Musicians' Directory of the International Biographical Centre. Dr. Knieter has also been recognized among the Leaders in America in the Human Development Profession by Alum News in the School of Education at NYU.
