Dr. Rothe has distinguished himself as a triple board-certified psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, researcher, and educator who is a founding faculty member and professor of psychiatry of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine/Florida International University (FIU). He is the founder and director of the medical professionalism curriculum for the medical school, which was honored with the Edward B. Harris Medical Professionalism Award of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (2018) as the best professionalism course of all American medical schools. He also serves as the assistant clerkship director for the medical school's psychiatry rotations, where he conducts the normal child and adolescent development seminar and the psychotherapy seminar at the residency level. Additionally, Dr. Rothe collaborates in research and is an adjunct professor of the Latin American and Caribbean Center and the Cuban Research Institute, and is a courtesy professor of public health at the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work at FIU.
Prior to his arrival at FIU, Dr. Rothe held leadership roles at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital as the director of the child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic and the psychiatric school consultation programs to the Dade Country (Greater Miami) division of special education, as well as the special education programs of the Bertha Abess Children's Foundation. Prior to this he served as director of the acute substance abuse treatment unit of the Miami Veterans Administration Hospital.
In addition to his scholarly activities, Dr. Rothe also has a psychiatry private practice in Coral Gables, Florida. As an expert in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry and also trained in adult psychoanalysis, he treats patients that are experiencing a variety life issues and mental health conditions. He has an active license to practice medicine in the state of Florida and has inactive medical licenses in Massachusetts, Georgia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Rothe is also board certified in forensic psychiatry and has extensive experience as a legal expert witness in cases involving juvenile delinquency, psychological trauma, traumas related to immigration and has served as an expert witness in Federal Court in various high-profile cases, on the side of the defense, involving commutation of the death penalty based on mitigating evidence presented in the post-sentencing phase.
In the course of his career, Dr. Rothe has worked on a wide variety of issues related to the mental health of adults, children and families and was chair of the American Psychiatric Association's Committee for Mental Health in the Schools. He is an internationally renowned expert in the mental health issues of immigrants and refugees, a topic about which he has written extensively and received national awards. He has authored close to one hundred articles and book chapters and is a co-author of the books, "Immigration, Cultural Identity, and Mental Health: Psycho-Social Implications of the Reshaping of America," (2020) and the upcoming, "Textbook of World Social Psychiatry" (2023), both from Oxford University Press. He also serves as a peer reviewer for several scientific journals. Dr. Rothe lectures nationally and internationally and is often called by the media to provide expert opinions on a variety of issues related to mental health.
Dr. Rothe grew up in the Dominican Republic in a home of immigrant parents, he obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic (1976-1982), followed by a medical-rotating internship and a surgical internship at the University of Puerto Rico / Mayaguez Medical Center (1982-1984), followed by a residency in general psychiatry at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital (1984-1987) where he received the Balloveras Memorial Award and was selected as the chief resident (1986-1987). He continued his education at the Cambridge Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston (1988-1990), where he completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry and was awarded the First Prize for Research in Progress by the New England Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (1988). He also completed training in Adult Psychoanalysis at the Florida Psychoanalytic Institute (2001).
Dr. Rothe is a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a distinguished fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, a psychoanalytic fellow of the American Academy of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis and an honorary fellow of the World Association of Social Psychiatry. He is the immediate past-president of the American Association of Social Psychiatry and President-elect of the American Academy of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis, and has been president of the South Florida regional council of child and adolescent psychiatry for the past 17 years.
Dr. Rothe has been the recipient of the following awards: The Agnes Purcell McGavin Award, the Bruno Lima Award, The Irma Bland Award and the Nancy Roeske Award of the American Psychiatric Association, the Jeanne Spurlock Award and the Distinguished Member Award of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Edward B. Harris Award of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Association of Hispanic Psychiatry and the Citation for Civilian Merit of the U.S. Armed Forces. He has also been a five-time recipient of the Outstanding Teacher in Psychiatry Award from the University of Miami, a two-time recipient of the Top Scholar Award of Florida International University and has been chosen by the Best Doctors in America list.
