Over the course of his career, Dr. Murthy has contributed a great deal of research to the medical field, including Hepatitis G virus in cadaver organ donors and transplant recipients, biocompatibility of dialyzer membranes, chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, kidney transplantation in highly sensitized candidates, and long-term outcomes in kidney transplantation, and published his work in various medical journals of repute. He also authored several chapters in leading books. He recently edited a comprehensive book titled "Issues in Kidney Disease: Transplantation" that covers all aspects of kidney transplantation.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Murthy earned a Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery from Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi University, India in 1977. He then completed advanced training from the prestigious Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India, in 1985 and from the New England Medical Center Hospitals in 1998. He subsequently trained at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation from 1998 to 2001, and served as a faculty at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH, University of Texas Houston Medical School, Houston, TX, and now Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX. In recognition of his excellent work, he was earned a diplomate of internal medicine and nephrology from the American Board of Internal Medicine. He also received a Gold Medal and several other awards for best performance in various subjects during his medical school years, and as a teacher during his career subsequently.
Within the coming years, Dr. Murthy intends to help lift the Baylor College of Medicine and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center to be the best institution for kidney transplantation in the country. He was inspired to specialize in nephrology by his professor in New Delhi, Dr. P. D. Gulati, and his mentor, Dr. Kripal S. Chugh in Chandigarh, India who shaped his career in nephrology and kidney transplantation. Supported by his wife and family, he will continue to guide the next generations of kidney professionals.
