Drawing on a background in news reporting and producing, Mr. Lotz is distinguished for his current, award-winning work as the Public Information Manager for St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). Since stepping into the role in 2020, he has taken responsibility for planning events, coordinating media coverage and managing the airport's website. His efforts resulted in him winning a 2021 Excellence in Airport Marketing, Communications, and Customer Experience Award from Airports Council International – North America.
Mr. Lotz started his career as a radio reporter for United Press International in Chicago in the 1980s, where the first story he covered was one of the longest school strikes in U.S. history. That position led him to a decade-long career as a news producer and assignment editor, working for TV stations including WTHI News 10, WWMT News Channel 3 and WZZM 13 On Your Side. Branching out into adjacent fields, he later held a variety of positions in public relations and communications. He has worked as a media coordinator for the Democratic Caucus in the United States Senate, a communications coordinator for the National Association of Broadcasters, a public affairs specialist/spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and a communications specialist for strategic communications at CACI International. Mr. Lotz's career also utilized his impressive public relations skills when he worked as a media advisor for Senate Democratic Leadership under then-Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) as well as a Congressional press secretary for several House members including U.S. Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-CA) and U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA).
Of his many career achievements, Mr. Lotz is particularly proud of his work covering numerous presidential visits for news outlets in Chicago, as well as his role in distributing transportation infrastructure data following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 for USDOT. Volunteerism has also played an important role in professional career. From 2003 to 2014, Mr. Lotz provided pro bono communications work to Travelers Aid International, a DC-based organization that aids people in transit who are in distress. He has also volunteered as a producer and on-air anchor for CRIS Radio, the Chicago-based reader information service for the blind and visual impaired.
To commemorate his accomplishments, Mr. Lotz has received numerous awards, including a 2021 Mid-America Emmy Award nomination from the Mid-America Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and 2020 and 2021 Michigan Association of Broadcasters Broadcast Excellence Awards in the category of new media. He was part of a team nominated for a 2020 Michigan Emmy Award by the Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. His work at the U.S. Department of Transportation earned Mr. Lotz several awards, including Public Affairs Department Awards for Best Crisis Response and Best Campaign Teamwork.
Mr. Lotz attended Loyola University Chicago, the University of Illinois Chicago and Columbia College Chicago. He is a past member of the Congressional Black Caucus Press Secretaries Association and Senate Press Secretaries Association, past DC chapter webmaster for American Women in Radio and Television and past chapter president and vice president of the Loyola University Chicago chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Outside of work, Mr. Lotz is a certified divemaster through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. He is a trained CPR/AED/first aid instructor and since his teens, Mr. Lotz has donated apheresis for leukemia patients through the American Red Cross and the National Institute of Health. He enjoys scuba diving, playing tennis, reading nonfiction and photography. He has been married to his wife, Julie Carpenter Lotz, since November 1998.
