During the early stages of his career, he gained valuable knowledge and experience through various clinical, executive and educational positions with the New York Eye and Ear Hospital, the SUNY Optometric Center of New York and Columbia University, where he worked as a research scientist. Dr. Petito served as an assistant professor and chief of primary care services at the State University of New York between 1983 and 1989.
An expert in his field, Dr. Petito holds a Doctor of Optometry from the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University and completed a residency in pediatric vision and vision training at the State University College of Optometry. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, Distinguished Practitioner of the National Academies of Practice, and Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry. He served as a member of the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement's Screening and Preventive Care Workgroup and the American Optometric Association's Federal Relations Committee. In conjunction with his work, Dr. Petito also contributed to his community through the Lions Club Indigent Clinic and serves as the Chair of the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education.
To commemorate his professional achievements, Dr. Petito was named 2022 Optometrist of the Year for the Florida Optometric Association. In 2009, he was also inducted into the National Academies of Practice. In a career filled with highlights, he is most proud of advocating for healthcare infrastructure improvements with the American Optometric Association, PCPI, National Quality Forum, and Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. Due to his wide range of knowledge, he has also authored several book chapters, articles, and white papers and served in editorial roles for several professional publications.
