After more than 35 years in the classroom, Dr. Zimmermann retired from Davison College in North Carolina as the Charles A. Dana professor emeritus of history in 2000.

After more than 35 years in the classroom, Dr. Zimmermann retired from Davison College in North Carolina as the Charles A. Dana professor emeritus of history in 2000. Aligned with the private institution since 1977, he initially served as the vice president of academic affairs for nine years, and subsequently began teaching in 1986. Dr. Zimmermann's long career history in academia also included teaching at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where he rose from an assistant to a full professor of history, and as the department chair.
A prominent historian, Dr. Zimmermann excelled in the study of Italian Renaissance of the 16th century. He also authored "Paolo Givio: The Historian and the Crisis of Sixteenth-Century Italy" in 1995, which was later translated into Italian in 2012. Mr. Givio was best known as an Italian physician, historian, biographer and bishop.
During an earlier stage of Dr. Zimmermann's scholarly career, he was active as a member of the selection committee of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation from 1967 to 1970. He subsequently served as a member of the Oregon Committee of the National Endowment for the Humanities between 1971 and 1977.
Civically engaged, Dr. Zimmermann enjoyed participating with various local organizations, including on the advisory council of the Botanical Gardens at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte between 2007 and 2008, as a member of the board of advisors for the Lowell Observatory from 1988 to 1993, and as a board director of Opera Carolina in Charlotte from 1980 until 1982. An avid climber, he also served with the American Alpine Club in New York as a member of its board of directors from 1975 to 1983 and as its president from 1979 to 1982. Likewise, Dr. Zimmermann sat on the board of directors of the North Carolina Outward Bound School in Morganton between 1978 and 1981.
Highly educated, Dr. Zimmermann received a Bachelor of Arts at Williams College in 1956, a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts at the University of Oxford in 1958 and 1964, respectively. Additionally, he studied at Harvard University, where he attained a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy at Harvard University in 1960 and 1964, respectively. As a part of established commitments in the field, Dr. Zimmermann is a member of the Renaissance Society of America, the Society for Italian Historical Studies, and the American Association for Italian Studies. Dr. Zimmermann is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. Zimmermann secured a Danforth Fellowship from 1956 to 1962, a Villa I Tatti fellowship from Harvard University between 1970 and 1971, and an American Council of Learned Societies fellowship from 1975 to 1976. Recognizing his professional and civic achievements, he received the Helen and Howard R. Marraro Prize from the American Historical Association in 1996 and a Presidential Book Award from the American Association for Italian Studies in 1997. Dr. Zimmermann was also selected for the Helen & Stewart F. Blake Philanthropy Award from Opera Carolina in 2015. He and his wife, Margaret, had the asteroid 'Callander' named after them by Lowell Observatory in 1983.
