MOUNT SINAI, NY, November 01, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Suffolk County Legislator Sarah S. Anker has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Legislator Sarah Anker has served as an elected official in the Suffolk County Legislature since 2011, through which she serves on behalf of the sixth legislative district. Likewise, as the owner of Anker Designs, she has found success in the public relations and marketing field working with both small businesses and large corporations, to which she brings deep and varied experience. In addition, she oversaw Long Island School Districts through Eastern Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services as a Public Relations Director. Prior to being elected to public office, she was appointed as the Director of Energy and Sustainability for the Town of Brookhaven in Farmingville, New York, where she initiated and managed the town's energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. Ms. Anker's experience in both public relations and constituent services led to her role as the Executive Assistant to the Town Supervisor, and Chief-of-Staff for a Town Councilmember.
A commitment to supporting the community inspires Ms. Anker's endeavors, and in 2001, she founded Community Health and Environment Coalition (CHEC) in honor of her grandmother who passed away from breast cancer. The organization addressed the disease and its relationship with environmental concerns. As the Executive Director, she collaborated with elected officials, government agencies, medical facilities, and community advocates to raise awareness about how our environment directly impacts our health. She was instrumental in spearheading the effort to move forward New York State Department of Health's Coram/Mt. Sinai/Port Jefferson Station Breast Cancer Follow-up Investigation as part of the New York State Cancer Surveillance Improvement Initiative.
Ms. Anker's community involvement includes being active in the local civic association, where her grassroots experience was exemplified as she partnered with community members to create a park in an area that was slated for development. The North Shore Heritage Park is the county's first public-private partnership that continues to inspire successful quality of life projects. In 2022, Ms. Anker completed the North Shore Rail Trail, a multimillion-dollar recreational path she facilitated since 2011.
As a Suffolk County Legislator, Ms. Anker's accomplishments are quite notable. Following the Sandy Hook Tragedy, she partnered with the Suffolk County Police Department to establish the SAVE (School Active Violence Emergency) Hotline, a panic button protocol for school districts. She continued to work with law enforcement and schools to create the anti-bullying website, www.SuffolkStopBullying.org. As the former Chairwoman of the county's Senior Committee, she focused much of her time on senior citizen issues including housing affordability, health concerns and senior targeted crime, which led her to initiate the website www.SCPDscamalert.org.
Through her role as Chairwomen of Suffolk County's Addiction Prevention and Support Advisory Panel, she has led the county in assembling experts in drug addiction prevention and support, as she leads the panel in creating additional resources and programs to better address the opioid epidemic. As the daughter of a Navy Veteran, she recognizes the need for outreach and support for our military personnel and their families by creating the county's Veterans' Resource Guide. With a love for our environment, she has sponsored numerous legislative resolutions to address environmental concerns including supporting the acquisition of thousands of acres of open space, facilitating the creation of the Marine Debris Pollution Awareness School Curriculum, and supporting the county's clean water initiatives.
Ms. Anker has served in a broad assortment of organizations, pursuing critical collaborative opportunities as a member of Mt. Sinai's Board of Education, Suffolk County's Board of Health, the Congressional Breast Cancer Advisory Board, New York State Environmental Roundtable, Clean Energy Taskforce, Suffolk County Cancer Prevention Task Force, YMCA Family Services, and the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Anker has accepted numerous commendations for her work, including nominations for both Citizen of the Year for the Environment from her local newspaper and New York State Senate and New York State Assembly Woman of Distinction Award. She also was recognized with the Brookhaven Town Honoree Award for Service to the Community and the Suffolk County Legislature Community Service Award.
With a desire to prioritize open communication, Ms. Anker hosted the "The Senior Spotlight Show", a local radio program that provided important resources and information to the senior citizen community. Moreover, in 2022, she published a children's book about ocean pollution titled "Below the Ocean: Keeping our Sea Friends Safe." She is in the process of publishing additional books to encourage children and adults to be proactive environmental stewards.
Looking toward the future, Ms. Anker plans to continue assisting others with local concerns and focus on educating the community regarding the environment and sustainability. She aims in pursuing a collaborative approach and in being an attentive partner to her constituents on solving issues of concern.
