Craig Scheef Followed His Own Path and Started Texas Security Bank

As the chief executive officer and chairman of Texas Security Bank, Craig Scheef feels that his faith has led him to success.

Mr. Scheef prepared for his career by earning a bachelor's degree in marketing from East Central University in 1985. Before settling on his course of study for his graduate degree, Mr. Scheef decided to attend the University of North Texas. Once there, he consulted with the placement office to find out which industries were hiring, and what he could expect as a salary. This behind-the-scenes research helped him make an informed decision that would determine the rest of career. He learned that the banking industry was an attractive option at the time, and since he had performed quite well in business classes that focused on accounting, finance and economics, the decision to become involved in the banking industry was a very logical one.

In 1988, Mr. Scheef entered the banking industry proper, working with First Interstate Bank in Texas, which would later become Wells Fargo. He asked himself, "what if there were a bank that was focused on products and services aimed at elevating champions of free enterprise?" The answer, as he discovered, was to create Texas Security Bank, where he has served as chairman since 2007. Today, the bank manages more than $1 billion in assets across four locations. In Mr. Scheef's opinion, "One of the things that is important to any organization, culture, is that people within that organization feel like they have a noble purpose, a good reason to get out of bed in the morning."

A man of faith, Mr. Scheef believes that God is always looking out for him. If he did not have his faith, he knows that he would never have had the courage to pursue his goals. He went almost a year with very little to no salary to get his company started, which shows, a big step of faith. He also credits his success to the fact that he genuinely likes working with people, especially one-on-one and in small groups. He is also genuinely curious and inquisitive; he likes to understand why people are the way they are and why they work the way they do.

In Mr. Scheef's view, banking is phenomenally rewarding for those that are interested in helping business owners. "You have to first have an understanding of how important business owners are in our society and our economy in terms of creating jobs and paying taxes." Mr. Scheef feels that some of the concepts and liberties that America was founded on are slowly being eroded, to the point where it is harder and harder for people to do business because of the lack of freedom and liberty. The government plays an important role in our economy and society, but Mr. Scheef is against the philosophies of socialism. His motto is, "Most people view the free enterprise system as either a tiger that should be shot and these would be socialists, or a cow that should be milked." He also believes that, "God does not call us to be successful, He calls us to be obedient."
