Following more than four decades of experience in nursing, Ms. Chalk retired from her distinguished career as a medical and surgical nurse in 2000. Affiliated for 25 years with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, she specialized in patient care and served as a clinical coordinator of neurosurgery in the operating room. Working alongside multiple doctors, Ms. Chalk was frequently involved in spinal surgeries, as well as procedures relating to brain tumors and intracranial aneurysms.
Prior to establishing herself in Norfolk, Ms. Chalk functioned as a staff nurse in the operating room at the House of Good Samaritan Hospital in Watertown, New York, from 1957 to 1959, shortly after earning her degree. She subsequently served as the head nurse in the neurosurgery operating room at the University of Virginia Hospital between 1959 and 1975.
Aside from her paid positions, Ms. Chalk has volunteered for the Sentara Brock Cancer Hospital in Norfolk for 20 years. She has remained active on the board of directors of the Parkinson's Disease Association in Virginia Beach, Virginia, since 2003 and has volunteered for the Parkinson Support Group since 2000.
Ms. Chalk studied at the House of Good Samaritan Hospital, where she earned a diploma in nursing and received the Dr. Walker Atkinson Award in 1957. To remain aware of developments in her field, she has been affiliated as a member of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, for which she also served on the clinical core and surgical core curriculum communications sections. She is also a former vice president of the Association of University Registered Nurses. Furthermore, Ms. Chalk has been active with the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, namely as the president of and publicity chair of the southeastern chapter of Virginia.
Well-regarded for her scholarly output, Ms. Chalk has authored a number of articles that appeared in various professional journals, and also served as the co-editor of "Core Curriculum for Operating Room Nurses-Neurosurgery." In recognition of her civic contributions, she received a Certificate of Merit from the Parkinson's Disease Association in 2001.
