After a long and successful career with Motorola Inc. that spanned more than 40 years, Mr. Gruenbaum retired from the telecommunications organization in 2010. Originally hired in 1966 as a development engineer, he transferred to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from Chicago in 1971 as an engineering group leader and continued to progress in the field. Among his subsequent noteworthy roles, Mr. Gruenbaum served as a senior buyer, commodity manager, purchasing agent, and production and inventory control manager. He also spent years as a purchasing manager before being promoted one last time to global sourcing engineer.
During the latter part of Mr. Gruenbaum's career, he was responsible for evaluating and ranking semiconductor suppliers for Motorola Solutions. He also frequently traveled throughout multiple countries, including China, Malaysia, Mexico, Germany, and Israel, surveying factories to determine which suppliers the company could place on their preferred supplier list.
Mr. Gruenbaum's interest in engineering was notably sparked by his involvement in amateur radio as an operator beginning in 1958. Throughout the course of his accomplished professional career, he was fortunate to have been involved in various projects, including the design of a communication system for a high-speed train between Boston and Washington, D.C., which notably led to Mr. Gruenbaum receiving a 3-A draft exemption. He also participated in the development of the FET mixer (field effect transistor mixer) for base stations and was part of the team that contributed to the Converticom project, which included transforming a portable radio into a mobile station.
Aside from his fieldwork, Mr. Gruenbaum was a tenured adjunct professor of purchasing and materials management at Nova Southeastern University in South Florida from 1983 to 2010. He presently remains active as a certified instructor of computer skills for OASIS Connections in Saint Louis since 2010.
Heavily involved in various civic interests, Mr. Gruenbaum has been an Alcoholics Anonymous mentor for more than a decade where he has been instrumental in helping many individuals achieve and maintain sobriety. He is also presently an assistant organist and choir member at Faith Lutheran Church in Clewiston, Florida, since 2022. Previously, Mr. Gruenbaum was involved as a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Plantation, Florida, as an organist and choir director.
Highly educated, Mr. Gruenbaum received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He also earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at the Midwest College of Engineering and a Master of Business Administration in Logistics, Materials, and Supply Chain Management at Nova Southeastern University. Additionally, Mr. Gruenbaum received certifications as a Certified Procurement Manager through the National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM), Certified Production and Inventory Control Manager through the National Association for Production and Inventory Control Management and credentials as a certified instructor of computer skills through OASIS Connections.
To remain aware of developments in his industry, Mr. Gruenbaum is a member of the NAPM, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the National Association for Production and Inventory Control Management. He is also a member and trustee of the Motorola Amateur Radio Club, a member of Eta Kappa Nu, which is the international honor society of the IEEE, and a life member of the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi.
Honoring his professional achievements, Mr. Gruenbaum was recognized with a Productivity Award, which was presented to him by Daniel Robert Graham, the 38th governor of Florida, on behalf of the South Florida Manufacturing Association. Mr. Gruenbaum was also recognized several times as the Purchasing Agent of the Month and received an award for good operating procedure and excellence in operating.
