With more than 25 years of excellence to his credit in computer science and electrical engineering, Dr. Kornegay has found success as a leader in his field. In this capacity, he serves as a Eugene DeLoatch endowed professor in cyber and director of the Cybersecurity Assurance and Policy Center at Morgan State University. Having joined the university in 2012 as a professor and IoT Security endowed chair, since 2017, he has focused his efforts on managing the research center's daily operations while securing funding for research projects. He supervises the staff as well as provides technical support for the center. Additionally, he is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is a senior member of the Engineering Professional Society.
Outside of his primary career efforts, Dr. Kornegay serves on multiple professional boards, including the technical program committees for several conferences in cybersecurity. He is a board member of the Maryland Cybersecurity Council, the Morgan State University's Morgan History Makers and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's IoT advisory board. He also is a member of the CAREER Award panel of the National Science Foundation.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Kornegay began his career as a research staff member with the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in 1992. He then was a faculty member with Purdue University in 1994 and joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997 as a Martin Luther King, Jr. visiting faculty. He continued his career as an associate professor for Cornell University until becoming a Motorola Foundation professor with the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2005.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Kornegay earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the Pratt Institute in 1985. He then attained a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1990 and a Doctor of Philosophy in the same area of study in 1992, both from the University of California, Berkeley. As part of his career, he holds patents, one for "Low-voltage high-speed differential logic devices and method of use thereof" from 2006 and one for "Method for monolithically integrating silicon carbide microelectromechanical devices with electronic circuitry" from 2009.
Within the coming years, Dr. Kornegay plans to become the top producer of African American doctoral students while continuing to be a leader in the area of hardware security. He strives to encourage younger generations to make smart decisions for their future.
