WASHINGTON, DC, November 14, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Marjorie L. Myers has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After working in the field of bilingual education for nearly four and a half decades, Dr. Myers retired from her work as principal of Key School "Escuela Key" a two-way Spanish Immersion School and Arlington Public Schools in Virginia. Key School is often referenced as the model for Dual Language Schools across the nation. Educators from the State of New Mexico and Utah share that after visiting Key School, they chose to work to make their states bilingual states. During the early stages of her career, Dr. Myers gained valuable expertise as an ESL teacher and as a bilingual counselor. She also served in several administrative roles for DC Public Schools, including serving as the Coordinator of Secondary ESL Programs and Instruction, being an assistant principal at Cardozo High School and the principal of HD Cooke Elementary School. Other experience was working as a research assistant for the National Science Foundation, running a one-room schoolhouse for Bechtel Corporation in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela and teaching Spanish and English as a second language in public and private schools in Florida and Georgia. Another stand out moment in her career has been being invited various times to contribute to books that others were writing about dual language education.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the industry, she aligned herself with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), The National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
Now that she is retired, Dr. Myers sits on the Board of Directors for Edu-Futuro, where she serves as the secretary. Edu-Futuro is a nonprofit organization that works in conjunction with Northern Virginia School districts to support the first in the family immigrant teens to prepare for and attend college.
Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Myers earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and secondary education from the University of Florida. Subsequently, she received a Master of Arts in bilingual and multicultural education from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and a Doctorate of Education in bilingual special education from The George Washington University in Washington, DC.
In recognition of her outstanding achievements, Dr. Myers received a Bilingual Special Education Award from The George Washington University, a Lifetime Achievement Award through the Arlington Rotary Club, and the Partner of the Year Award from Edu-Futuro. Above all others, she was presented with the "La Cruz de Isabel La Católica" by King Felipe VI of Spain for promoting the Spanish language and culture in the USA and abroad throughout her career.
As a retiree, Dr. Myers works as an interim or substitute administrator for local school systems, mentors new administrators, and as always plans to continue traveling.
