Mr. Utley has extensive knowledge and expertise in the music industry as a musician, songwriter, record producer, and composer of more than 50 years. Throughout the course of his professional career, he has had the opportunity to work with many great musicians both on stage and on Broadway. Early on, Mr. Utley also had the pleasure of working for Atlantic Records in Miami, Florida, at Criteria Studios backing numerous artists such as Aretha Franklin, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Duane Allman (of the Allman Brothers).
After working with Mr. Walker Mr. Utley was recruited in 1973 to play on Jimmy Buffett's first major label album. The experience later led to his involvement in producing and co-producing more than 19 of Mr. Buffett's albums and touring the country performing with him in the Coral Reef Band. Presently, Mr. Utley notably serves as the band's record producer and musical director.
Additionally, Mr. Utley as a recording artist along with Robert Greenidge has recorded six albums as "Club Trini." He has also produced Roy Orbison and Rita Coolidge, and has worked alongside Kris Kristofferson and Barbara Streisand in "A Star Is Born." Looking toward the future, Mr. Utley plans to continue creating music because it is something he is very passionate about and something that he also believes will keep him young.
Born and raised in Arkansas, Mr. Utley studied locally, earning a bachelor's degree in zoology at the University of Arkansas in 1969. While in college, he had planned to continue his education and follow a path in medicine. However, during his senior year in Arkansas, Mr. Utley was invited to record a session with the Bill Black Combo in Memphis, Tennessee, and the experience changed the trajectory of his schooling and his career.
As a part of Mr. Utley's professional commitments, he has been an active member of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Utley was recognized as the Arkansas Alumni Association Johnson Fellow in 2019 where he had the chance to share his experiences on campus and inspire students. Mr. Utley was also inducted into the Arkansas Entertainers' Hall of Fame in 2013, won the Nashville Music Award for Best Children's Album in 1997 as the producer of "The Parakeet Album" and won the best arranger at the Tokyo Music Festival in 1981.
