After leading a distinguished career in academia for more than five decades, Dr. Gomes retired in 2017 as an adjunct instructor at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Throughout his many years in the classroom, Dr. Gomes specialized in religious studies and philosophy and was an expert in Catholic theology and world religions.
Teaching at several different institutions in the northeast during his tenure, Dr. Gomes notably held faculty appointments at West Connecticut State University in Danbury, Connecticut, Pace University in Pleasantville, New York, and, among other institutions, Hunter College in New York City and Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. However, he spent his full-time teaching career at Marymount College, Tarrytown, New York, having been hired as an instructor in 1963 and progressing to a full professor. As Fordham University shut down Marymount College in 2007 (Marymount had merged with Fordham in 2001), Dr. Gomes was forced to retire, as did the rest of the Marymount faculty. Dr. Gomes also had the opportunity to serve in various other positions during his tenure, including as the two-time chair of the department of philosophy/religious studies, as the chair of the humanities division, and as the two-time coordinator of the humanities program, and was influential on several academic committees.
A prolific author, Dr. Gomes has authored several books, including "Meditation for Beginners in Six World Religions" via Xlibris in 2019 and "Discovering World Religions: A Guide for the Inquiring Reader" via iUniverse in 2012. During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Gomes also published "Song of the Skylark I: Foundations of Experiential Religion" and "Song of the Skylark II: Meditation – Teachings and Practices" via the University of America Press in 1991.
In Dr. Gomes' free time, he frequently attends a Roman Catholic church where he is an active parishioner. Dr. Gomes finds this to be a very important aspect of his life.
Originally from Bangladesh, Dr. Gomes eventually settled in the U.S. where he pursued his degrees. An alumnus of the University of Notre Dame, he first earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1958, followed by a Master of Arts in philosophy in 1964 from Notre Dame. He earned a Master of Arts in theology in 1963 from the College of the Holy Cross in Washington, D.C. Dr. Gomes subsequently attended Columbia University in New York where he garnered a Doctor of Philosophy in philosophy in 1973.
To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Gomes is a member of the American Academy of Religion. He is also a respected member of Phi Beta Delta.
Attributing his professional achievements to being a spiritual person, Dr. Gomes also notes that he has always maintained confidence in himself and his capabilities, which ultimately set him up for success.
