His role as director of Comprehensive Care Unit requires oversight and delivery of a significant course load averaging 15 students per third and fourth year of dental school.

He also brings exceptional academic credentials to the appointment, including a Doctor of Dental Medicine from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Dental Medicine and a bachelor's degree from MacMurray College. Moreover, in 2020, Dr. Silva was named a fellow of the International College of Dentists.
Dr. Silva hails from a proud military family and himself committed to a decade of military service in the U.S.M.C., including active duty from 1967 to 1974, then as a member of the reserves through 1977. He completed one tour in Vietnam as an officer pilot, having trained to fly gunship helicopters. In the military, Dr. Silva was responsible for devising combat schedules, and he deploys that logistical expertise to help graduate students improve their organizational skills in order to gain control of their academic life and professional training. Dr. Silva also relies on his military experience to assist aspiring dentists to advance their people, patient and case management skills, and he regularly exposes them to variables across platforms, prompting them to better balance their own availability with patient needs.
Today, Dr. Silva generously donates time and energy to promote the health benefits of appropriate and comprehensive dental care. In particular, he collaborated to develop the Smiles for Veterans program with the support of grants and in partnership with regional laboratories, benefiting from the offer of reduced fees, material and donations to help cover costs. To date, the program has delivered over 800 arches of removable dentures, aiding hundreds of veterans who do not have access to dental care through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Silva counts this initiative as a major career achievement, and he plans to continue teaming with veterans to explore how dental care can contribute to a more holistic outlook on personal well-being.
Dr. Silva attributes his longevity in the field and his professional success to a stable family foundation. He also avidly networks with relevant contacts via memberships in the American Dental Association and the St. Louis Dental Society, and he maintains contact with other military personnel via participation in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the American Legion, Marine Corps League, and the Combat Helicopter Pilots Association. Dr. Silva is eager to continue providing comprehensive instruction to graduate students seeking to enter the field of dentistry, and he is committed to maintaining the highest standards of training and patient care.
