Drawing on years of counseling, consulting, and dementia care expertise, Ms. Bell presently excels as a program consultant with Best Friends Adult Day Center through Christian Care Communities of Kentucky. A seasoned dementia care researcher, she provides continuing education for those with dementia, oversees volunteers, and ensures that all of the activities they provide are engaging. Through person-centered care, Ms. Bell aims to build on a person's remaining faculties and individualize care to support their happiness and reduce behaviors that are challenging to families. Her model of patient-centered and relationship-centered care has been utilized around the world due to its success.
Previously, Ms. Bell worked as a family counselor with Sanders-Brown and lent her expertise to the Alzheimer's Association. Likewise, she served with the University of Kentucky's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. Due to her outstanding breadth of knowledge, she has authored a number of publications, including "The Other Face of Alzheimer's Disease," "The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care," which she wrote alongside David Troxel, and "The Alzheimer's Disease Bill of Rights." Additionally, Ms. Bell published articles in the American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Care Quarterly.
In order to remain abreast of ongoing industry changes, Ms. Bell aligns herself with the Gerontological Society of America and Alzheimer's Disease International. An expert in her field, she earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and chemistry from Transylvania University in 1944. Subsequently, she returned to college after 40 years and received a Master of Social Work from the University of Kentucky. Due to her professional achievements, she received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Transylvania University, the Ruth Von Behren Award from the National Council on Aging, and the Trager Award for Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Aging via the University of Louisville. In 2022, she was also recognized for her contribution to the community through the Senior Citizen Centre. While her career has been filled with highlights, she is most proud of beginning the first philosophy of care for persons with dementia using friendship, a relational approach. Within the coming years, Ms. Bell intends to maintain the quality of her work.
