Dr. MacDonald earned her medical degree from the University of Edinburgh School of Medicine. She pursued her research interest in fetal and newborn pharmacology at the New York State Health Department, the National Institutes of Health, and the Children's National Medical Center.
Backed by years of medical and educational experience, Dr. MacDonald serves as an emeritus professor of pediatrics for the George Washington School of Medicine & Health Sciences. Over the years, she has worked for the Children's National Medical Center, DC, as director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, director of the Fellowship training program, Director of Research, and Vice Chair of the Division of Neonatology. She has also lent her considerable expertise to the Capital Regional Perinatal Center, NY, Innova Medical Center, Loudoun, VA, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, IL.
In conjunction with her work, Dr. MacDonald has provided free medical care for children through a clinic at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the Hematology Department at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is a senior fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Pediatric Society, the Royal College of Physicians (UK), the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health (UK), the Society for Pediatric Research, and the European Society for Pediatric Research, and is an alumna of the National Institutes of Health.

In addition, she has contributed more than 120 publications to her field of medicine, including thirteen textbooks.
While her career has been filled with highlights, Dr. MacDonald is most proud of her ability to mitigate the stress and fear confronting family members of her patients by providing openness, empathy, honesty, and accessibility and her membership of the Harriet Lane Alumni Society, granted by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for "Advancing the mission of pediatrics and pursuing excellence in the care of children".
Currently, Dr. MacDonald is writing companion novels. Both are international medical thrillers set in the Cold War era.
