HAYES, VA, November 23, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- L.T. Wells Jr. has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With more than six decades of experience to his credit in community service, Mr. Wells has distinguished himself throughout the course of his life in multiple roles of civic leadership. Shortly after moving to Hayes, Virginia, in 1961, he played an instrumental role in chartering and organizing a chapter of the United States Junior Chamber – popularly known as the Jaycees, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conferring leadership and business skills to men and women throughout the U.S. – for the area of Gloucester and Mathews. In this capacity, he rose to become the vice president and president of the chapter and received numerous awards in honor of his accomplishments, including the Spark Plug Award in 1966, the Outstanding Jaycee Award in 1967 and a Distinguished Service Award in 1968.
Adjacent to his work with the Jaycees, Mr. Wells contributed his efforts on behalf of several nonprofit organizations, such as the Bena Yacht Club, where he functioned as the entertainment chairperson, vice president and president. He also helped to organize and charter the Abingdon Volunteer Rescue Squad, for which he ran emergency calls for a period of five years and served as the vice president and president in 1969.
Following this period, Mr. Wells joined the Abingdon Ruritan Club, a group of community-minded citizens in Bena, Virginia, in 1973, for which he served as both vice president and president and organized the famous Seafood Festival. First held in 1979, this biannual event features a wealth of food, drink and live entertainment, and has raised millions of dollars in funds for the Ruritan Club and community since its inception. Mr. Wells also organized the Ruritan Catering Team, which he managed for seven years. For his efforts on behalf of the organization, he has received several accolades, including a volunteer award in 1993, the Ruritan Club Man of the Year Award in 1980, 1983, 1992 and 1996, the Tom Downing Fellow Award, which recognized his outstanding leadership and dedicated service, in 1999, and the President Support Award in 2004 and 2015.
Likewise dedicated to honoring local history, Mr. Wells played an instrumental role in organizing Bucks Store Museum of Gloucester, Virginia. Upon inception, he then turned it over to the Guinea Heritage Association where he now serves on the board. Notably, he aided in convincing the owner of the C.B. Rowe & Son General Store, a 100-year-old staple of the community, to convert the establishment into the Bucks Store Museum, and served as the chairman of the board of directors for 10 years.
An inexhaustible advocate of his community, Mr. Wells has engaged in several other civic pursuits, including volunteering his time to the building of a home for Habitat for Humanity, transporting an electric car several thousand miles to a national race in Phoenix, Arizona, on behalf of Gloucester High School, serving with the crew team of the Gloucester Rowing Association, volunteering time to build a 10,000-square-foot Ruritan building, constructing a 3,500-square-foot Fellowship Hall for the Gloucester Point Baptist Church, and preparing meals for the Boy Scouts of America during Polar Bear Day in 1998, 1999 and 2000. For his selfless efforts in this capacity, he has earned several honors and recognitions, including induction into the Gloucester High School's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018, a Rowing Association crew boat that bears his name and a Masonic Community Builders Award in 2019, among many others.
Outside of his prolific dedication to community service, Mr. Wells has worked throughout much of his career in the construction industry. To wit, he served as the owner of L.T. Wells Home Builders, a home-building specialist that offers green construction, custom homes, residential construction and more. He was further associated with the Tidewater Flooring Company, where he received both a Community Service Award and the Retailer of the Year Award in 1981. Looking toward the future, Mr. Wells aspires to remain in good health, scale back his business commitments and spend more quality time with his loving wife Rachel Wells of 63 years.
