Drawing on 50 years of experience as an executive chef and hailing from a family of restaurateurs, Mr. Catalanotto is recognized for his expertise as the owner of Nephew's Ristorante, a fine dining restaurant serving Sicilian and Italian Creole cuisine for residents of the New Orleans region. In his role, he oversees daily operations of the business and develops recipes, especially the gravy and eggplant dishes in which he specializes.
Mr. Catalanotto got his start in the restaurant field at the young age of 12, when he went to work in the family restaurant owned by his uncle, Tony Angello. As time passed, he took on more responsibilities, learning business operations as well as the recipes cooked by his mother, Tina, and his Aunt Frances. He went on to become the longtime executive chef of Tony Angello's Ristorante, serving from 1972 to 2005. When Hurricane Katrina hit, the restaurant was flooded; it took two years for Mr. Catalanotto and his uncle to restore the business, and they re-opened in 2007. In 2015, Mr. Catalanotto's uncle passed away, and the family decided to close the restaurant. After a year off, however, Mr. Catalanotto decided he was ready to go back to work, and he opened Nephew's Ristorante in 2017.
Mr. Catalanotto attributes his success to his family, particularly his wife, mother, cousin and uncle. To remain aware of developments affecting his field, he is a member of the National Restaurant Association and the Louisiana Restaurant Association, and he enjoys supporting his community by donating to local schools. Looking toward the future, Mr. Catalanotto plans to pass the business on to his niece, a Louisiana State University student who currently works at the restaurant. In his retirement, he looks forward to staying active in the business as a consultant to offer guidance to his niece and traveling to Sicily to see the land of his ancestors.
