Mr. Grossman concluded his distinguished career in mental health as a senior post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) therapist in 2020 after more than 30 years in his position. Taking a unique approach to the PTSD population, he provided in depth behavioral, psychodynamic and existential therapy sessions to individuals, groups and family members. He worked primarily with combat veterans from the Vietnam War, Korean War and Iraq War. He developed one of the few large-scale group experiences with Vietnam Veterans in the country. The group consisted of 25-30 members engaged in PTSD psychotherapy. He facilitated this group for 25 years. Mr. Grossman has extensive knowledge, experience and expertise in treating all forms of trauma and its symptoms.
Explaining his work with the VA to be personally transformative, Mr. Grossman said that it made him a more insightful and understanding therapist. He also developed a strong sense of dedication and compassion for the many patients he had served over the years. Prior to his contributions to the VA Mr. Grossman worked in a variety of other mental health settings including inpatient treatment as a therapist for Harlem Hospital and for the psychiatric Day Hospital in Bedford Stuyvesant in Brooklyn.
Mr. Grossman has an extensive history of working with both homeless veterans and civilians utilizing therapy and concrete service delivery. This work was done with both the VA Medical Center and Volunteers of America. Mr. Grossman maintains a particular interest in combat veterans' issues and causes including fighting for benefits and access to mental health. Mr. Grossman Is also considering returning to private practice.
Looking forward to the future, he aspires to continue his studies of Psychoanalyst Carl Jung as a member of the C.G. Jung Foundation so that he can expand his knowledge in psychiatry and psychoanalysis.
Mr. Grossman acquired a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology at Queens College in 1978, followed by a Master of Social Work Degree from Fordham University in 1980. Mr. Grossman is a licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State Of New York and is a Board-Certified Diplomate. Throughout his career in mental health, Mr. Grossman has found support and guidance from the National Association of Social Workers. Recognizing his success in his field and longevity, Mr. Grossman received 30 years of Service Award from the VA.
