Since graduating from law school in 1985, Mr. McDonald has served in several roles including as a senior vice president and on the Executive Committee for Merchant and Gould PC. Currently Of Counsel, he works in federal patent litigation, managing cases and strategies. He handles daily activities in litigation, including taking depositions and writing briefs, as well as handling IPR proceedings involving challenges to patents. In this capacity, through which he acts as lead counsel, Mr. McDonald utilizes his technical background, particularly in cases involving computers and software.
In recognition of his expertise, Mr. McDonald has received numerous awards, including recognition as one of the Best Lawyers for seven years. In 2015, he was honored as the Best Lawyer's Lawyer of the Year for Patent Litigation in Minneapolis. In 2013, Mr. McDonald was selected for inclusion in Top 100 Super Lawyer's in Minnesota and has been a SuperLawyer since 2006.
Mr. McDonald also served as a past chair for the board of directors of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association in 2017 and served as chair of the alumni board of advisors of the University of Minnesota Law School and College of Science and Engineering.
