Drawing on over four decades of expertise in the medical field, Dr. Yeung specialized in painful degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine. Prior to his retirement in 2019, he built a prolific career serving in private practice at the Desert Institute for Spine Care and the Arizona Institute for Minimally Invasive Spine Care. In this capacity, Dr. Yeung was responsible for performing transforaminal endoscopic surgeries, as well as diagnosing and treating the causes of back pain and sciatica from painful degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine, particularly herniated discs, bulging discs with annular tears and foraminal stenosis.
Dr. Yeung initially began his vocation serving in the United States Navy as a lieutenant commander from 1975 to 1978. Following his military service, he garnered expertise as a consultant and a clinical instructor at the Phoenix Orthopedic Residency Program, the Cerebral Palsy Clinic and the Good Samaritan Family Practice from 1978 until 1999. During this time, he was also active as an associate physician at The Orthopedic Clinic, where he worked between 1978 and 1988. He then contributed to the Arizona Orthopedic Surgeons in private practice from 1989 and until his retirement in 2019. Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Yeung pursued an education at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in zoology and chemistry in 1965. He continued his academic efforts at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, New Mexico, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1970. Dr. Yeung then completed his medical internship at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona in 1971, and concluded his residency in general and orthopedic surgery at the Maricopa County General Hospital in 1975.
As a commitment to his field, Dr. Yeung has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the International Endoscopic Therapy Spine Society, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Western Orthopedic Association, the Arizona Orthopedic Society, the Arizona Medical Association and the Maricopa County Medical Society, among many others. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, he has served as an executive director for the International Intradiscal Therapy Society and the International Intradiscal and Transforaminal Therapy Society.
Well regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. Yeung has received multiple awards, including the Chinese Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019, the Asian and Pacific Islander Community in Action Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014, the Becker's Spine Surgeon Leadership Award in 2013 and the Professional Achievement Award from the Greater Chinese United Association in 2013, to only name a few. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of developing his own philosophy and technique of the minimally invasive endoscopically guided laser method called, the Yeung Endoscopic Spine System. Additionally, Dr. Yeung is gratified to have served as the first naval officer to perform spinal surgery in the far east.
Reflecting on a long career, Dr. Yeung attributes much of his success to his philosophy, technique and ability to effectively treat severe and painful spinal conditions, which resulted in decreased opioid dependencies in his patients. Looking toward the future, he hopes that his legacy in the field of spinal surgery continually thrives and further contributes to the prevention of pain-related opioid dependencies.
