Motivated by his interest in mathematics and chemistry, Mr. Seppala was driven to pursue a career in chemical engineering, culminating in his current role with Honeywell. As a senior semiconductor engineer since 2005, he works as a process engineer responsible for the assembly of MEMS accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. As part of his duties he specified, purchased, installed, and qualified an additional assembly line to more than double the production capacity. He has also worked with Honeywell's Advanced Technology Labs to provide packaging recommendations and support for various projects. Outside his main career path, he has also contributed to his community as a baseball coach.
During the early stages of his career, Mr. Seppala worked for such companies as PolarFab, Cypress Semiconductor, EF Johnson, Boeing and BMC Industries, Inc. Throughout the course of his career, he has developed the process for back grinding, backside etching and backside metal with PolarFab and has procured additional testing equipment to better monitor the process. Similarly, he performed failure analysis on reed switches with EF Johnson and patented a laser-assisted liquid-phase etching of copper conductors through the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Seppala earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and metallurgical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1979. In a career filled with highlights, he is most proud of receiving the Outstanding Engineer Award from Honeywell in 2018. Looking toward the future, Mr. Seppala aims to experience continued growth in the industry as he prepares for retirement.
