Accumulating more than 13 years of experience in tax law, Mr. Pontius represents individuals and businesses locally, nationally, and internationally before the Internal Revenue Service and other state taxing authorities regarding various complex tax matters.
As a veteran-owned business, Mr. Pontius began his legal career in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps and served with the 1st Armored Division from 2006 and 2009 in Wiesbaden, Germany and Tikrit, Iraq. He subsequently served as a student extern to Judge Elizabeth Crewson Paris of the U.S. Tax Court in 2009 before garnering expertise with several prominent tax firms, including KPMG in Virginia as well as Kundra & Associates, Frost & Associates, and Daniel Rosefelt and Associates in Maryland. During an earlier stage of his career, Mr. Pontius served as a law clerk on behalf of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in 2004 and the American Law Division of the Congressional Research Service in 2005.
Over the course of his legal career, Mr. Pontius has helped his individual and business clients resolve issues involving tax liens and levies, offshore and domestic disclosures, audits, appeals, and many other relative areas of tax law. He has also become experienced in advising clients regarding the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act and the Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act. Looking toward the future, Mr. Pontius aims to continually expand his practice while also taking on more prominent cases.
Writing extensively in his field, Mr. Pontius has contributed numerous professional articles since 2013, including "Updates on Denial or Revocation of U.S. Passports for Seriously Delinquent Tax Debtors" in Tax Talk, the publication of the Tax Section of the Maryland State Bar Association, in the Spring of 2018, and "What Every Attorney Needs to Know About IRS Tax Liens" in Tax Talk in the Fall of 2014 newsletter of the Bar Association of Montgomery County Maryland.
Civically active, Mr. Pontius has been affiliated with Community of Hope, a non-profit organization devoted to serving the local homeless population. He has also contributed numerous scholarships to military veterans.
To prepare for his career in law, Mr. Pontius earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Gettysburg College in 2002. Continuing his studies, Mr. Pontius received a Juris Doctor from Widener University Commonwealth Law School in 2004 and a Master of Laws in taxation at Georgetown University Law Center in 2010.
As a part of his established commitments to his field, Mr. Pontius is a member of the Tax Section Council of the Maryland State Bar Association, the Tax Section of the American Bar Association, and the Vice Chair of the State and Local Taxes Committee of the District of Columbia Bar. Previously Mr. Pontius was the Co-Chair of the monthly Tax Practice and Procedure Roundtable for the Section on Taxation of the Federal Bar Association and the Chair of the Tax Section of the Montgomery County Bar Association.
In light of his many professional achievements, Mr. Pontius has been recognized multiple times in various law journals, including Super Lawyers as a Rising Star for his expertise in tax law in Maryland from 2015 to 2019 and DC from 2017 to 2019. He was also recently selected to the Super Lawyers list for Maryland and DC for 2023. Mr. Pontius made the Top Attorneys list for Northern Virginia Magazine in 2022. He has also been recognized as a Top Attorney in Bethesda Magazine in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2019 and 2021 and as a Bar Leader by the Montgomery County Bar Foundation in 2019.
