Drawing on years of professional expertise in journalism and education, Dr. McKeen excels as the author of 13 books and as professor and chair of the Department of Journalism at Boston University. He served the University of Floridain in similar positions for 24 years. During the early stages of his career, Dr. McKeen gained valuable expertise with the University of Oklahoma, Western Kentucky University, the Indiana University School of Journalism, The Saturday Evening Post, The American Spectator, The Palm Beach Post, The Courier-Tribune (Bloomington, Ind.) and the Capitol News Bureau in Oklahoma City.
Alongside his work, Dr. McKeen has dedicated himself to his community as a volunteer basketball coach, a member of the board of directors for the Florida Magazine Association and the Florida Society of News Editors, and with Habitat for Humanity. In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, he aligns himself with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the World Technology Network, the Popular Culture Association, and the Southern Book Critics Circle.
Dr. McKeen holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from Indiana University, a Master of Arts in mass communication from Indiana University, and a PhD in higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma. Throughout his career, he has written several books, including "Outlaw Journalist," his biography of Hunter S. Thompson, "Mile Marker Zero," winner of the Florida Book Award, "Everybody Had an Ocean," "Too Old to Die Young," "Rock N' Roll is Here to Stay" and several others.
In recognition of his outstanding body of work, Dr. McKeen has been honored many times, earning the Mark of Excellence Award through The Society of Professional Journalists, the Gannett Teaching Fellowship through The Gannett Foundation, and the Teacher of the Year Award from the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications. Additionally, he received the Gold Medal for Nonfiction from the Florida Book Awards and the Gold Medallion for Service from the Florida Scholastic Press Association. In the coming years, Dr. McKeen aims to continue teaching and finish a book proposal.
