Joanne S. Calcagno Honored for Work as an Educator

    COLLEGE POINT, NY, December 15, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joanne S. Calcagno has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Recognized by students and colleagues alike for her passion and patience in the classroom, Joanne S. Calcagno dedicated a notable three decades to teaching within the New York City public school system, leaving a lasting legacy upon her retirement in 2010.

Ms. Calcagno spent the majority of her career as an elementary school teacher and special education teacher at P.S. 214 in Queens, New York, where she utilized her expertise in curriculum development and instruction for kindergarten through sixth grade. She has noted that the most gratifying aspect of her career was seeing her students make academic progress and experience significant social development, and, in turn, thank her for her hard work. Earlier in her career, she worked in a nursery school for seven years, having also been a computer cluster teacher. She recalls she immensely enjoyed announcing, "School's out!" at the end of a long school day.

Finding great fulfillment and success throughout her career, Ms. Calcagno has been published in teaching magazines in recognition of the creative classrooms that she has created. Notably, in 2008 and 2019, she was honored as Educator of the Year. She has also been a guest on Ashford Radio. Ms. Calcagno attributes her success to the support she received from her mother. When her mother passed away in 1998, she thought that she would never overcome the feeling of loss she endured. Her husband encouraged her to follow her mother's achievements by showing her how much they were alike, and that she could offer many acts of grace to society. She has been eternally grateful for his direction and care.

With this sentiment, Ms. Calcagno is involved in several philanthropic organizations, some of which include the Veterans Memorial Fund, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Kids Wish Network, Shriners Hospitals for Children, the National Childhood Cancer Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, the American Breast Cancer Foundation and Kiva. On a professional level, she likewise maintains membership with the American Association of University Women, the National Women's History Museum and the National Organization of Women, along with the Kennedy Center, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Since retiring in 2010, Ms. Calcagno has focused on writing and has authored multiple children's books, namely "Being Bullied Finding Friendship: A Boy's Quest for Hope," about an immigrant child who becomes acclimated to city life in Queens, which leads to his adolescent adventures. She is also the author of the fiction book "Finally an Answer" about a girl living with bipolar disorder and "Rewind Fast Forward: A Practical Guide of the Transgender Student for Teachers," a work of non-fiction. More recently, she published "Finally an Answer and Beyond the Next Chapter" in 2021. She is currently working on the book "Job Discrimination in the Workplace" and plans to write more children's books.

To prepare for her career, Ms. Calcagno attended Queens College, where she earned a bachelor's degree and later a master's degree in elementary education in 1976, which she achieved in 14 months. She went on to conduct postgraduate school at the Bank Street College of Education and the College of Staten Island. She credits her second-grade teacher, Mrs. Nevins, for inspiring her to take on the teaching profession.

Looking ahead, Ms. Calcagno plans to continue living by the words of the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you." Musically inclined, she enjoys playing the piano and attending theater productions in her spare time. She would like to dedicate this recognition to teachers around the globe, for they are training the leaders of tomorrow.
