THE PLAINS, OH, December 15, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lois Deimel Whealey has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

As a citizen activist in Athens, Ohio, Lois Deimel Whealey was inspired by her mother, who was a teacher, to help others. Mrs. Whealey attended Stanford University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1951. From there, she pursued a Master of Education from the University of Michigan, earning it in 1955, and a Master of Science in social science from Ohio University many years later, completing that degree in 2007.

In the years between her degrees, Mrs. Whealey held a number of teaching positions at Swayne School, Fort Knox Dependent Schools, Amerman School and Slauson Junior High School. She also hosted Women Today and Yesterday, and served on the executive committee of Democracy Over Corporations. From 1974 until 1978, she was a member of the Athens County Regional Planning Commission. She has been involved in a number of community organizations, as well as the Girl Scouts.

To recognize her for her immense contributions, Mrs. Whealey has been presented with a number of awards and accolades, including the Unsung Unitarian Universalist Award from the Ohio-Meadville District Unitarian Universalist Association in 1984, a Thanks Badge and Woman of Achievement Award from Girl Scouts of Black Diamond, a How-to Award from the Educational Press Association of America in 1990, a Donna Chen Women's Equity Award from Ohio University in 1994, and a Community Service Award from the Athens Community Services Council in 1998. She has been named as an outstanding feminist by the Athens Herstory Celebration in 2002, and has received the Nora Price Award from SEOH Planned Parenthood in 2009, the Social Justice Award for Contributions Over a Lifetime from United Campus Ministry, and a Lifetime Achievement Award for Social Justice from the United Campus Ministry at Ohio University in 2017.

Mrs. Whealey has been more of an informal educator in recent times. Once she had children to raise, she didn't really do much professional teaching. She is proud of working with the Girl Scouts since it was an inheritance from her childhood. Her daughter and granddaughter were also involved in Girl Scouts. When she looks back on her greatest influences, Mrs. Whealey feels that her mother was certainly an inspiration. Her mother served in the Nevada Legislature and was very active in politics. There were people along the way who also influenced her, including the choral director at Stanford, whom Mrs. Whealey described as "quite a character," Harold Schmidt. At the University of Michigan, Mrs. Whealey impressed Professor Claude Eggertsen by earning the highest grade in the class of history education.

Today, Mrs. Whealey focuses her efforts on producing a local television show about women today and yesterday. Drawing on her interest in history, she is able to put the efforts of the women she discusses into greater context for viewers. It is her hope that through this program, she will be able to honor those who have gone before, as well as those trailblazers currently in the making.
