Ms. Wieland enjoyed a fulfilling career in education that spanned more than four decades, having distinguished herself as the director of teaching and learning, as well as curriculum and instruction, for Colby Public Schools, a school district in Colby, Kansas, between 1991 and her retirement in 2022. In this capacity, she was responsible for devising an effective curriculum on behalf of students, as well as supporting teacher development and promoting technological integration. Throughout this period, she also co-chaired the coordinating council, results-based development committee and tech cadre at the school district, and facilitated grant writing, implementation, and coordination. Additionally, Ms. Wieland served as the principal of the Thomas County Academy, a charter school, from 2004 until 2009, Assistant High School Principal from 2010 until 2012, and as an organizer and coordinator for the iConnect iLearn network of innovative educators from 2008 to 2015.

Prior to her work at Colby Public Schools, Ms. Wieland found success between 1974 and 1991 in multiple roles at the Northwest Kansas Educational Service Center, including as a staff development director, curriculum coordinator and assistant special education director. Among her duties during this time, she presented at various state and national-level conferences and symposia, wrote and implemented grants, and assisted in the development of the Individualized Education Program.

Well-regarded for her manifold accomplishments in service to the field of education, Ms. Wieland published an article through the CLI Difference, a publication of the Curriculum Leadership Institute, on the subject of systemic design and delivery for curricula. She has also parlayed her knowledge to students as an adjunct college instructor at several institutions, including Kansas State University, Baker University, Wichita State University and Fort Hays State University. Additionally, Ms. Wieland represented Kansas as an ambassador to the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, for which she earned the M. Claradine Johnson Excellence in Education Award in 2009.

A dedicated civic advocate, Ms. Wieland worked with the Educational Services and Staff Development Association of Central Kansas as a curriculum and instruction consultant from 2004 to 2006 and as a statewide trainer and regional affiliate chair for KAN-Ed between 2003 and 2012. Concurrently, she served on the Local Area One Workforce Development Board and Youth Council for the 62 counties of central and western Kansas from 2002 until 2016. Ms. Wieland also contributed her expertise at the Kansas State Department of Education, through which she served in multiple committee roles and as a member of several important projects, including the Kansas Alliance of 21st Century Leaders, the Kansas Academy for Leadership in Technology, the Kansas Professional Leadership Team and the Kansas Educational Leadership Commission, among others.

To remain aware of developments in her field, Ms. Wieland had affiliation with several relevant organizations, such as the Association for Career and Technical Education, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the National Association for Gifted Children. Furthermore, she served as the treasurer, vice president and president of the Kansas Association for the Gifted, Talented and Creative, of which she played an instrumental role in founding. Ms. Wieland also sat on the Kansas Staff Development Council as its convention registration chair and was bestowed with State Recognition for Quality Performance in Staff Development in 1991 and the Award for Outstanding Staff Development in 1998.

Drawing inspiration from the example of her parents, whom she fondly recalls for their love of learning, Ms. Wieland attended Cloud County Community College, where she attained an Associate of Arts in general education in 1971. She subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education and a Master of Science in curriculum and instruction at Kansas State University in 1973 and 1974, respectively. Years after attaining a certification in working with gifted students in 1978, Ms. Wieland graduated from Leadership Thomas County, a program of the Thomas County Chamber of Commerce, in 1994, earned elementary and secondary principal certification and district-level certification through Fort Hays State University in 2003 and 2004, respectively, and received an education specialist degree in adult education at Pittsburg State University in 2004. Over the course of her educational journey, she joined the honorable society of Phi Delta Kappa, for which she served as a local chapter newsletter editor and as the committee chair for the Northwest Kansas Academic Bowl.

Though her professional journey has been filled with many memorable moments, Ms. Wieland is especially proud to have forged so many fruitful partnerships with not only school district personnel but also the board of education.
