At the start of his career journey, Dr. Zirvi initially set his sights on computer science before pivoting to the medical field. He earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering, with a concentration in electrical engineering, from Princeton University in 1993, where he graduated summa cum laude and as a member of the Phi Beta Honor Society. In 2000, he obtained a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy from Cornell University Medical College. During his graduate studies, he helped design the original Zipcode DNA sequences used to patent and commercialize the Universal Zipcode DNA Array, helping to revolutionize DNA analysis and sequencing. From there, Dr. Zirvi completed an internship at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and a dermatology residency at the University of Pennsylvania by 2004. That same year, he attained a strategic leadership in healthcare certificate jointly from New York University and Summit Medical Group.
Upon receiving certification from the American Board of Dermatology, Dr. Zirvi has been a practicing dermatologist since 2004. For the past 18 years, he has excelled in his multiple roles as an attending dermatologist at Overlook Medical Center/Atlantic Health Group, an adjunct clinical instructor at Weill Cornell Medicine and a dermatologist at Summit Medical Group. Among his duties, he performs frequent regional skin care screenings to increase awareness about the risks of sun exposure and skin cancer. Additionally, since 2014, he has served as chair of the Alumni Schools Committee for Northern Middlesex County at Princeton University.
With his research being a significant aspect of his career, Dr. Zirvi is highly regarded for his research projects on diagnostics for DNA cancer detection. Notably, he is a co-patentee of "Detection of Nucleic Acid Sequence Differences Using the Ligase Detection Reaction with Addressable Arrays" and "Accelerating Identification of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Alignment of Clones in Genomic Sequencing." Among his numerous written works, most recently, he published "Acquired Perforating Calcific Collagenosis After Topical Calcium Chloride Exposure" in the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology in 2010. Dr. Zirvi is also published in the Archives of Dermatology, Oncogene, Clinical Biochemistry and more.
Finding great success throughout his career trajectory, Dr. Zirvi is honored to have been named a Top Doctor by U.S. News & World Report, New Jersey Monthly and New York Metro Area's Castle Connolly. In addition, he was the recipient of the Patient's Choice Award in 2011 and the Beerman-Johnson Resident Research Award from the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in 2003. Dr. Zirvi credits his success to the lessons instilled in him by his parents, which included the value of education and helping others.
To remain abreast of his field, Dr. Zirvi is an associate of the American Academy of Dermatology. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, he is also involved with AmFAR and the Summit Medical Group Foundation. He also dedicates time to volunteering with charitable organizations. In five years' time, he looks forward to continuing to see patients and working closely at one of Cornell's laboratories to contribute to the constant advancements of science.
