Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in psychotherapy, Dr. Benjamin has earned distinction as a leading psychoanalytical therapist. In this capacity, she is an independent therapist. Since 1975, she has focused her efforts on working with adult patients who are unhappy in their relationships, are struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem or depression, and those who are feeling stagnant in their lives generally. She integrates psychodynamic, behavioral and cognitive methods to help her patients recognize their strengths and limitations while employing strategies to change patterns in their lives that are impeding them. She specialized in sex education and sex therapy. She works alongside a psychiatrist, referring patients to them when they require medication as part of their treatment plan.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Benjamin began her career as a therapist with the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health and became a consultant for the peer support network of Doctors Without Borders in 1998, for which she herself helped develop the training program. She also served as a consultant for the National Center for Women in Retirement Research at Long Island University and was a faculty with both York College and Columbia University.
Outside of her primary career efforts, Dr. Benjamin has contributed a wealth of articles to professional journals, including for the Department of Social Services and the New York State Division for Women. She has been published in Women's Letter and Kimberly-Clark for her work on sexuality and has testified at city and state hearings on women's aging issues. She was also featured in various television and radio interviews regarding midlife and aging issues as well as psychosexual and emotional issues.
Dr. Benjamin has presented over 50 lectures to professionals and the general public and has conducted more than two dozen workshops on her areas of expertise, including serving as a speaker and presenter on sexuality in aging at Mount Sinai Hospital in 2006. Additionally, she started a clinic volunteer program at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and supported them in the building of the clinic for the sanctuary and community. She is the vice president of the Metropolitan Society of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, a member of the board of directors of the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health and the Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, and a member of the American Counseling Association.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Benjamin earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Brooklyn College in 1965 and a master's degree in health education from Columbia University in 1968. She then attained a Doctor of Education in health education with a specialty in sex education from Columbia University in 1970. Well-qualified in her field, she is a licensed psychoanalyst with training certificates for sex therapy, psychoanalytic psychotherapy and treatment of sexual dysfunction.
Within the coming years, Dr. Benjamin intends to continue her practice as a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist. She strongly believes in the benefits of psychotherapy. She underwent psychoanalysis herself for eight years and had a positive experience that changed her life and committed herself to helping others in the same way.
