For more than four decades years, Dr. Buff enjoyed a renowned professional career as a physicist who specialized in applied materials. Having retired in 2022 as a senior physicist at Varian Ion Implant Systems in Gloucester, Massachusetts, he spent more than 25 years with the organization. Dr. Buff also held leading roles at Applied Materials, the Mission Research Corporation, and the International Business Machines Corporation, and briefly taught as an assistant professor at Dartmouth College.
Throughout the course of his career in the industry, Dr. Buff was most notably involved in the design of more than 2,000 highly successful implanters that were subsequently sold at $5 million each. He also had the opportunity to work with the SAS-3 x-ray astronomy satellite during his years working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among other achievements, Dr. Buff looks forward to remaining in the industry in a consulting capacity.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Buff has authored and co-authored a multitude of scholarly articles in such publications as the Journal of Applied Physics, Fusion Technology, the Astrophysical Journal, and the professional publication of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Dr. Buff has also secured numerous U.S. patents in his field.
Initially intrigued by the field due to his proficiency in mathematics and physical science during high school, Dr. Buff excelled even further once he began pursuing his bachelor's degree. Accepted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was placed in the high honors program where he participated in advanced courses before graduating with a Bachelor of Science in physics with honors in 1969. Dr. Buff subsequently studied at the University of Colorado at Boulder where he achieved a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1971 and 1974, respectively.
Dr. Buff has been active as a member of several prominent professional organizations, including the IEEE, the International Astronomical Union, the American Astronomical Society, and the American Physical Society. He is also a longtime member of Phi Beta Kappa.
