Having earned the distinguished title of professor emeritus, Dr. Piirto retired from his role as the Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Department Head at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo in 2015. A faculty member on campus for more than 30 years, he functioned as an associate professor from 1985 until 1990, after which he was promoted with tenure to full professor. During his teaching career, he also had the pleasure of serving several times as a visiting professor at Seinajoki University of Applied Sciences in Finland and as a forest management and leadership workshop instructor for the USDA Forest Service, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), and other organizations.
Currently, Dr. Piirto remains active as the principal, owner and consulting forester for Crestline Forestry Inc. in Hobart, Wisconsin. An expert in forestry, natural resources, as well as the sustainable management of giant sequoia and coast redwood forests, he specializes in providing instruction, leadership, and support to clients with respect to forestry and forest management. Additionally, Dr. Piirto is the owner of Piirto Farm Ltd.
During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Piirto served as a research assistant at both Colorado State University and the University of California Berkeley while he pursued his advanced degrees. He went on to spend 10 years as a forester and silviculturist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service in California after earning his doctorate degree, after which he transitioned into academia. Additionally, Dr. Piirto was appointed by the Governor and approved by the California Legislature to serve as a member of the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection during the course of his career.
As a scholar, Dr. Piirto has authored numerous articles for scientific and forestry journals. Among them, he published "Giant Sequoia Insect, Disease, and Ecosystem Interactions" and "Ecosystem Management Approaches of National Forest Giant Sequoia Groves."
Highly qualified in his field, Dr. Piirto received a Bachelor of Science at the University of Nevada in 1970, a Master of Science at Colorado State University and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of California Berkeley in 1977. Additionally, he is a registered professional forester in the state of California and a certified silviculturist through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Furthermore, he is a member of the Society of American Foresters, the Forest Products Research Society and the Society of Wood Science and Technology.
In recognition of his achievements in the field, Dr. Piirto has been highlighted with a California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection Francis Raymond Award for Outstanding Career Achievement in Forestry. He also received an Outstanding Contribution to College Agriculture CalPoly Award from the Plant Science Corporation, a Cal Poly College Agriculture Outstanding Teaching Award from Dole Food Company, and several Meritorious Performance and Professional Promise Awards from the USDA Forest Service and Cal Poly between 1977 and 2015.
