Leveraging more than four decades of excellence in environmental law, victims' rights and teaching, Ms. Violet has earned distinction as a leading lawyer in Rhode Island and the first female attorney general elected in the United States. In this capacity, she is a lawyer with her own firm, Arlene Violet Law Office.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Violet began her career in the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office. She then served as Attorney General for Rhode Island from 1985 to 1987. During her time in office, she focused her efforts on cases involving organized crime, environmental issues and victims' rights while also pushing for banking reform. She also uncovered the Rhode Island Share and Deposit Indemnity Corporation insurance fund to support the state banking system was underfunded, which ultimately led to a run on the banks four years later. Following her tenure, she was a talk show host for WHJJ Radio from 1990 to 2006. Among her professional accomplishments, she was inducted to the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 1996.
Outside of her primary career efforts, Ms. Violet has been a religious sister and nun with the Sisters of Mercy since 1961. She joined the convent out of a desire to make a positive difference in the world with her life exercising her creative side, she authored an autobiography "Convictions: My Journey from the Convent to the Courtroom" in 1988 and "The Mob and Me," a book about the witness protection program, in 2010. She also was a musical writer for "The Family, A Musical Drama About the Mob" which premiered in 2011.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Violet earned a bachelor's degree in English and philosophy from Salve Regina College in 1966. She then attained a Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School in 1974 and was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar Association the same year. Well-qualified in her field, she was also admitted to the United States Supreme Court Bar Association in 1985. Within the coming years, Ms. Violet intends to continue working in the public interest area and raising her involvement in various charities.
