Drawing on more than 35 years of experience in the field of education, Dr. Kelso has earned distinction as a professor at the Queens University of Charlotte since 1996. Bearing a particular focus on political science, he is responsible for teaching courses that cover a wide assortment of subjects, such as campaigns and elections, Congress and the Presidency, European Politics, Environmental Politics, and African Politics, among many others. Among his other duties at the university, Dr. Kelso has twice served as the chairperson of the department of political science and international studies, contributed as a member and leader of numerous committees, led several student trips abroad, including to Ireland, Central Europe, South Africa and Italy, and participated in a faculty delegation to China in 1999.
Prior to his work at the Queens University of Charlotte, Dr. Kelso distinguished himself in teaching positions at a number of academic institutions, such as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the Pennsylvania State University at its Altoona campus, St. Francis College and Vanderbilt University, where he embarked upon his professional journey as a teaching assistant in 1987. To remain aware of developments in the field, he has, at times, maintained his affiliation with several relevant organizations, including the American, Midwest, Southern and Western Political Science Associations.
Well-regarded for his scholarly output, Dr. Kelso has contributed his insights to several publications, including chapters in "The Environmental Presidency" and "Global Environmental Policy and Administration," both of which were published in 1999, and several articles, such as "A Lasting Legacy? Presidents, National Monuments and the Antiquities Act," which was published via Presidential Studies Quarterly in 2017. His book review for "Green Talk in the White House: The Rhetorical Presidency Encounters Ecology" also appeared in the same publication in 2007. Additionally, Dr. Kelso has participated in innumerable conferences and symposia as a panelist, speaker and discussant, and has interviewed for a host of media outlets across the span of his career.
Dr. Kelso first sought a formal education at Murray State University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science, summa cum laude, in 1986. Following this accomplishment, he continued his academic efforts at Vanderbilt University, where he received a Doctor of Philosophy in political science in 1992. His dissertation focused on the impact of electoral participation on public policy, reflecting his longstanding research interests in environmental policy, electoral behavior and political leadership.
To commemorate his myriad accomplishments, Dr. Kelso has received several accolades, including the Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award in 2017, the Joseph W. Grier Distinguished Professor Award in 2003, and several Faculty/Staff Enthusiast of the Year awards in 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2007.
