Leveraging more than four decades of excellence in medical technology, Ms. Thomas has earned distinction as a leading microbiologist with the Alabama Department of Public Health. In this capacity, she has been lending her expertise to the department part-time since 2018, focusing her efforts on overseeing the regulatory certificates for the department, such as the water testing, milk testing and laboratory testing. Additionally, she is a valued member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Outside of her primary career efforts, Ms. Thomas is a member of Zonta International, where she helps provide scholarships for appropriately aged women through the Young Women in Public Affairs program, the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship, and the Amelia Earhart Fellowship. The organization has 32 districts, and at the international convention, one of the most significant awards is selecting three districts that had a real impact in their district for a service award. She serves as the acting treasurer and former governor for District 11, which is one of the districts recently honored with this award.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Troy University in 1980. She then attained a certificate in medical technology from St. Margaret's School of Medical Technology in 1981. Well-qualified in her field, she is a registered medical technologist with the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Thomas worked as a medical technologist in the private sector for 10 years. She then was a senior microbiologist for the Alabama Department of Public Health Laboratories for 25 years. During her time at the state laboratory, she became a supervisor in 2006. During that time, she was an associate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an Alternative Responsible Agent for the BT laboratory, and then the manager of the quality management division of the Alabama Department of Public Health until retiring from the role in 2017.
Looking to the future, Ms. Thomas plans to participate in the master gardeners program through the extension office out of a passion for the art. She was nominated to become the president of their local master gardeners group for 2023. Additionally, she intends to continue as the acting treasurer of Zonta International – District 11 until 2024. Her main goal is to maintain her health and presence in her retirement, striving to lend a hand to people in need in her community.
