Having officially retired from academia in 2012, Dr. Chafe is now recognized as the Alice Mary Baldwin professor emeritus of history at the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University and as a professor emeritus at the Sanford School of Public Policy. An expert in his field with long-term interests in gender and racial equality, Dr. Chafe notably taught such courses as American History Since World War II, Civil War to the Present, Civil Rights Movement, and Women's History.
During Dr. Chafe's distinguished tenure at Duke University, which began in 1971 as an assistant professor of history, he subsequently rose to full professor in 1979, chaired the department of history in the Trinity College from 1990 to 1995, and served as a dean for approximately a decade between 1995 and 2004. As dean, Dr. Chafe and his associates were critical in creating a new curriculum that involved a research component. He was also influential in increasing the number of minority faculty members by approximately 150% with the assistance of the university president, thus forming a much more diverse campus. During an earlier stage of his career at Duke, Dr. Chafe also implemented a new oral history program. Receiving a $250,000 grant from Rockville Foundation in its first year, the program continued for 40 years with foundation and university support and graduated 38 doctoral students.
Noting his strong sense of purpose and direction to his success, Dr. Chafe always desired to work and advocate for social change. Much of his commitment to civil rights and women's rights has been rooted in his experience with the Social Gospel in his church youth group.
A widely-published author, Dr. Chafe's long list of more than a dozen books includes "Civilities and Civil Rights: Greensboro, North Carolina, and the Black Struggle for Freedom" in 1981, "A History of Our Time: Readings on Postwar America" in 2011, and "The Unfinished Journey: America Since World War II" in 2021. Dr. Chafe also has a new book coming out in the spring of 2022 titled "Lifting the Chains: The Black Struggle for Freedom in America Since Reconstruction" and he is currently writing his next book, which will be titled "What Might Have Been."
Civically, Dr. Chafe was active with DukeEngagefor the program in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2010 and served as a program leader until 2017. DukeEngage is an initiative that empowers students to address the critical needs of others by completing a summer of immersive service in partnership with either a U.S. or international agency. Dr. Chafe also served in a religious capacity as an assistant minister in Long Island, New York, after several years as an activist in high school with the American Baptist Church.
Highly educated, Dr. Chafe first studied at Harvard University, where he wrote his honors senior thesis on W.E.B. Du Bois, and graduated magna cum laude in 1962. He subsequently attended Union Theological Seminary for one year on a Rockefeller Theological Fund Fellowship, then attended Columbia University where he acquired a Master of Arts degree in 1966, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1971.
Active in his field, Dr. Chafe is a member of the American Historical Association and the Southern Historical Association and is a member and past president of the Organization of American Historians. In honor of his accomplishments, he received the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award and the Roy Rosenzweig Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Chafe also received numerous fellowships from such organizations as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and the National Humanities Center.
