Having been a pioneer in pediatric medicine, she had her own private practice for almost 28 years, Susan Adelman MD PC, which eventually became part of the University of Michigan's department of pediatric surgery. A well-regarded professional, Dr. Adelman was the first female president of the Wayne County Medical Society and of the Michigan State Medical Society. She later was elected to the Council of Medical Service and served on the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association. She also was the editor for Detroit Medical News for 17 years and wrote a monthly column for AMNews for 10 years. Additionally, she contributed a wealth of scientific papers and several book chapters. She retired from medical practice in 2002, shifting her profession to more creative pursuits.
Dr. Adelman is now an artist, author and silversmith. She had studied geology for her undergraduate education and became the owner of Hershberg Jewelry in 2003, which she utilizes as a foundation for creating and selling her jewelry. She crafts with primarily sterling silver and semiprecious stones and enjoys painting as well, typically using oil on canvas. For her written works, she began with "The Rebel: A Biography of Ram Jethmalani," a book about a famous Indian lawyer and senior member of the Indian Parliament, in 2014. She then published "After Saturday Comes Sunday" in 2018 featuring her friendship with 92-year-old Chaldean matriarch Norma Hakim and telling the history of Aramaic speaking people of the Middle East, and next "From Jerusalem to Delhi, Through Persia" in 2022, which focused on the affinity for Indian culture experienced by Israelis and other Jews.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Adelman earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. She then completed an internship in 1968 and a residency in 1972, both at the Henry Ford Hospital. She subsequently underwent a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Detroit Medical Center finishing in 1974. Well-qualifeid in her field, she is certified by the American Board of Surgery.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Adelman is proud to have received the Shin Award from the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Headliner Award by the Women of Wayne State University Alumni Association in 1991. She then was awarded a Plaque of Recognition from the Board of Directors of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and another from the Board of Directors of the Michigan State Medical Center. In 2004, she was given a plaque for her contribution to the Wayne County Medical Society and was later honored with a Maimonides Award from the State of Israel Bonds.
Within the coming years, Dr. Adelman intends to continue working on writing for her blog and may delve into podcasting.
