Dr. Lampe has led a distinguished career in the foreign language and culture field as a prominent multilingual spokesman and actor in radio, television, and industrial films for more than 40 years, beginning in 1972, and as a respected translator for the U.S. Department of State, The White House, and numerous public and private entities. He also taught as a professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) for more than 30 years and directed its language programs during much of that period. During his distinguished tenure in academia, Dr. Lampe also oversaw the Center for Arabic Abroad program in Egypt as its director between 1989 and 2000, a national initiative that was funded for the study of Arabic in its native environment, and the Center for Occupationally-Specific Language Instruction and Internship Abroad. Presently, Dr. Lampe remains active as an academic advisor for language and culture in a consulting capacity since 2008.
During earlier stages of his career, Dr. Lampe taught English as a second language in Tunisia for the Peace Corps from 1965 to 1968. He subsequently taught French at Brown University in 1968 and served as a language program coordinator and senior instructor for the Peace Corps in Tunisia and Morocco from 1969 to 1971. Dr. Lampe contributed substantially to the enhancement of U.S. language and culture capacity in other noteworthy roles, including executive director and president of the American Association of Teachers of Arabic, senior research advisor on behalf of the Center for the Advanced Study of Language, deputy director of the National Foreign Language Center, and senior academic advisor for the American Councils for International Education for the Language Flagship in Syria, Egypt, and Morocco, until 2018. He was a member of the board of the Tangier American Legation Institute in Morocco and continues to serve as a Fellow of that organization.
Having co-authored and edited numerous works, Dr. Lampe's most recent article, 'Intercultural Communication, Curriculum Development, and Assessment,' was published in 2017 in the Handbook for Arabic Language Professionals in the 21st Century. Dr. Lampe has also contributed to such publications as the International Law Institute and the Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company in his area of expertise, and he also published 'Culture Proficiency Guidelines' and co-chaired the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) committee that produced the 'ILR Skill Level Descriptions for Competence in Intercultural Communication.'
Since retiring from his full-time career, Dr. Lampe has served as the past president of the Ormond Beach Historical Society in Ormond Beach, Florida. As the organization's president, he focused primarily on leading the efforts to create and fund the proposed new Ormond Beach Museum of History at the MacDonald House. Dr. Lampe continues to remain active with the Historical Society as a member of the board and executive board. Frequently giving back to various other nonprofit and charitable organizations, Dr. Lampe is also a member of the Sierra Club, which is recognized as the largest grassroots environmental movement in the nation, due to his passion for climate change and other environmental issues. With respect to politics, Dr. Lampe has volunteered his time as a poll worker on several occasions.
Dr. Lampe received a Carnegie Scholarship to study Arabic and the Levantine dialect at the British and Foreign Office Training School for its diplomats. Highly educated, he garnered a bachelor's degree in international affairs and government at American University in 1965, followed by a master's degree and Doctor of Philosophy in international relations/Islamic studies at SAIS of the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Lampe also holds an advanced certificate in Arabic from the Middle East Center for Arabic Studies in Lebanon. He speaks fluent Arabic, French, and English and has also studied Spanish, Italian, and several other languages throughout the course of his professional career.
To further advance his place in the field, Dr. Lampe remains a prominent member of the American Association of Teachers of Arabic and other language, history, and cultural organizations.
