Drawing on more than 25 years of experience as a professional interdisciplinary scientist (microbiologist, medical laboratory scientist, and clinical pathologist), Dr. Smaw has thrived as a Biodetection Liaison (Scientist & Microbiologist Subject Matter Expert) with the United States (U.S.) Department of Homeland Security, Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) since February 2022. She specializes in identifying potential biological threats across the U.S. and she serves as the National Medical Surveillance Point of Contact for reporting and preventing outbreaks of highly virulent infectious diseases of local, state, territorial, tribal, and global regions. Dr. Smaw previously worked as Microbiologist/Regulatory Officer with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after finding success as a Program Management Officer (Biological Scientist) in the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 4.5 years. In addition, Dr. Smaw is a Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) within the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps.
In her career, Dr. Smaw found success as a Senior Scientist/Microbiologist Supervisor with the Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA), Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) Laboratory where she served for 10.5 years. Dr. Smaw also worked as a Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Indian Health Service on the Navajo Reservation in Kayenta, AZ. In order to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in her field, Dr. Smaw maintains active affiliations with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Society for Microbiology (ASM), American Phytopathological Society (APS), Society of American Federal Medical Laboratory Scientists (SAFMLS) and the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA) to name a few.
Throughout her career, Dr. Smaw has been honored with numerous awards, including the uniformed service awards- Commendation Medal, Hazardous Duty Award, two Achievement Medals, COVID-19 Pandemic Campaign Medal and Presidential Unit Citation to name a few. Dr. Smaw has been bestowed with the Medical Laboratory Scientist Junior Officer of the Year Award on behalf of the USPHS Medical Laboratory Science Professional Advisory Group. Dr. Smaw attributes a great deal of her success to her grandparents, both whom taught her the importance of education at a young age. Dr. Smaw's overall goal is to serve her country as a USPHS officer for 30 years and retire at the rank of Captain or higher.
