SAINT ANSGAR, IA, January 24, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nels R. Golberg has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Golberg enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a carpenter and owner of Nels Golberg Construction, where he drew upon his vast expertise in cabinetmaking, footings, block foundations, house framing, drywall, brickwork, stonework and architectural work to serve the needs of his clients. Dedicated to his craft, he was able to build 24 homes during the 35 years that he was self-employed. Now retired at the age of 89, he looks back with pride upon many of the jobs he completed from his self-employed era and from other times during his career, especially his work at the Hormel Estate and Hirsch Home, built in 1895 and located in Austin, Minnesota. Another standout accomplishment from his career was his success in inventing an energy efficient rafter, which he did in the 1950s while building homes for GI members in Austin.
Prior to embarking on his self-employed carpentry work, Mr. Golberg was an apprentice in Austin, Minnesota and served as a Sunday School superintendent. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. In 1956 and 1957, he was stationed as a military policeman 10 miles north Seoul, South Korea, within a mile of an orphanage that housed 65 orphans from the war. Periodically, Mr. Golberg would visit the orphanage to inquire about their needs for winter clothes, and he befriended a Korean boy who was secretly cared for by his unit. Later, his unique military experiences were featured in the Mason City Globe Gazette. He is proud to have travelled on an honor flight to Washington, D.C.
Mr. Golberg has been deacon and chairman of his congregation, the First Lutheran Church of Saint Ansgar, and he is a longtime member of the American Legion. Over the years, he has served as a volunteer carpenter for various nonprofit organizations and church groups. He has been married for 62 years; he and his wife raised two daughters and a son, and they now have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
