Nancy S. Thompson, PhD, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Dr. Nancy S. Thompson is recognized for her expertise as an English professor with the University of South Carolina



She focuses her efforts on serving as a director of graduate student research for more than 35 linguistics and education graduate students and secondary teachers in training.

    BOULDER, CO, January 26, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nancy S. Thompson, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Leveraging more than four decades of excellence in English education, Dr. Thompson has earned distinction as an English professor emerita with the University of South Carolina. Having joined the institution as an assistant professor of English in 1975, she was promoted to associate professor in 1982. Since then, she has focused her efforts on serving as a director of graduate student research for more than 35 linguistics and education graduate students and secondary teachers in training.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Thompson began her career as an English teacher for Riverview Gardens High School in St. Louis County in 1961 and became a basic skills and yearbook teacher at Tonto Elementary School in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1963. She then was an English teacher with Tempe High School in 1964 until taking a role as an English and yearbook teacher for Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix in 1965. She was a curriculum developer in 1969 and took a role the same year as the co-director of the communications program in the English Department of Tempe High School, later serving as a graduate teaching assistant at Arizona State University.

Dr. Thompson continued her career as an English instructor for the Opportunity Scholars Program of the University of South Carolina in 1971 before she became an assistant professor of English in 1975. Following this time, she was an assessment consultant for the Bridges Writing Program, funded by the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education of Benedict College, a Historically Black College in Columbia, South Carolina. In 2001, she served as a faculty member for the summer professional development seminars for English teachers from the Russian federation that were newly independent states. She taught with the Peace Corps in South Africa from 2007 to 2009 as part of her commitment to her field. She also was a co-principal investigator for the National Science Foundation research project on "Enhanced Learning in Undergraduate Education: A Research Communications Studio Model" with her colleagues Michael Matthews and Elisabeth Alford with the University of South Carolina's College of Engineering.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Thompson has contributed a wealth of research to English education, including a book "Teaching/Writing in Third Spaces: The Studio Model" with co-author Rhonda Grego in 2007 and the chapter "Imagination at the Edge of Eruption: Sylvia Ashton-Warner's Passionate Self-Teaching" with Judith Giblin James in the book "Provocations: Sylvia Ashton-Warner and Excitability in Education," which was published in 2006. Among many other works, she has also served as an editor for English Journal, English International and Carolina English Teacher, and additionally has given numerous book reviews and media presentations.

Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Thompson earned a Bachelor of Science in education, English and business from Southeast Missouri State University in 1961. She then attained a Master of Arts in education with an experienced teacher fellowship in teaching English to the disadvantaged from Arizona State University in 1968. She gained a Doctor of Philosophy in English and education from the same institution in 1975.

Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Thompson is proud to have had the "Nancy Thompson Achievement Award For Enduring Enthusiasm and Service To The Field" established by the University of South Carolina's Composition and Rhetoric Association in 2001. She was honored with the English Department Service Award in 1982 by the University of South Carolina and was selected as one of the top five instructors for the English Department Teaching Award in 1988. She also received a plaque from former Lieutenant Governor Mike Daniel for service on the Lieutenant Governor's Writing Awards Committee and was inducted as a member of the National Council for Research in Education. Passionate about teaching on a global scale, she intends to continue her work as an educator and hopes to resume traveling in the near future.
