She was named to the International Educators' Hall of Fame by Youth On the Move, Inc. in 2015 for serving as an excellent advocate for student success.

Leveraging more than three decades of excellence as a college counselor and educator, Dr. Preston has earned distinction as a counselor. In this capacity, she is a counselor with Compton College. Since 2019, she has focused her efforts on seeing students who need counseling, primarily working with nursing program students. She assists in writing the general education curriculum for the program and conducts information sessions for students who are interested in learning about the nursing program. She also assists students who need strategies to repair their transcripts and works with athletes who require assistance with achieving their academic goals. Additionally, she serves as the vice president of the MidCities Union Board of Directors in Compton and is a chairman of the Board (St. Timothy's Manor) for local senior citizens housing.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Preston began her career as the director of community action with the Community Action Agency in Mobile, Alabama. After serving in this role for several years, she joined Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where she served for fourteen years. She joined Compton College as a registrar in 1886. She was appointed as associated dean and was the vice president of student affairs for the college for 20 years. Additionally, she was a counselor for EI Camino College for 13 years.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Preston earned a Bachelor of Arts from Alabama State University in 1969 and a Master of Education in counselor from the University of South Alabama in 1972. She then attained a Doctor of Education from The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, in 1984.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Preston was named educator of the Year by Phi Delta Kappa in 2003 and was the first African American to serve as president of the Alabama Counseling Association in 2014. She was also appointed as Distinguished Faculty by Compton College, EI Camino College and Compton Center in 2014. Additionally, she was named to the International Educators' Hall of Fame by Youth On the Move, Inc. in 2015 for serving as an excellent advocate for student success.
Within the coming years, Dr. Preston intends to continue her work, including pilot volunteering, providing guidance to students in need. She achieves great satisfaction from seeing others achieve their goals, and is looking forward to continuing to help students secure their futures.
