An art appraiser since 1989, Ms. Martin, of Fine Art Services in Saint Michaels, Maryland, is sought-after for her extensive expertise. Additionally, Ms. Martin appraises books and periodicals and art-related publications.
During an earlier stage of her career, Ms. Martin was employed by Conde Nast's Vogue magazine in New York City in 1972 as a secretary in Fabric Department and, soon, as the Assistant Fabrics editor. While working for Vogue, however, she was exposed to photography and quickly became intrigued by the art form. Ms. Martin moved to Washington, DC and was offered an opportunity to work at Lunn Gallery/Graphics International in Washington, D.C., an internationally known gallery, who with five other American based galleries created the photography market in the States which was instrumental in her transition into becoming a gallerist herself. In 1983, she established the Martin Gallery as owner and director, through which she had the opportunity to focus on fine art photography and collaborate with such notable artists as Ansel Adams and William Eggleston. While managing her gallery, Ms. Martin also served as a consulting director at Gallery Patina on behalf of the National Council on Aging between 1988 and 1990. In this capacity, she designed and supervised exhibitions of artwork for all types of media by artists over the age of 55. She also worked alongside staff members in the preparation, writing, and presentation of grant proposals for the National Endowment for the Arts, private corporations, and individuals. Furthermore, Ms. Martin taught as an instructor in the Center for Career Education at George Washington University from 1995 to 2002, lecturing to fine arts students, commercial and amateur photographers.
Ms. Martin has been fortunate to be involved in a multitude of artists' art shows and exhibitions throughout the course of her career, namely Sally Mann and Joyce Tenneson for whom she helped launch their careers. Among many other accomplishments, Ms. Martin appraised a collection of photographs and ephemera by William Henry Fox Talbot, who was recognized as an early pioneer in photography for the Bodleian Library at Oxford University.
A graduate of the Moore College of Art and Design, Ms. Martin earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fashion design in 1972. Upon receiving a John Frederick Lewis Fellowship in 1971, Ms. Martin was also grateful to be able to travel to Europe between her junior and senior years of college and purchase and experiment with a variety of fabrics.
To remain aware of developments in her field, Ms. Martin is a member of the American Society of Appraisers. Recognizing her hard work and dedication, Ms. Martin has received several accolades from various industry-related professional societies and photography groups.
