An expert in folk studies and values they reveal, Dr. Coburn has enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career that spanned more than four decades. She is the author and editor of multiple books, including "The Search for Shared Values," an eight-book series containing 40 stories from varying ethnic traditions. She formerly served as president of the University of Santa Barbara, an institute of graduate studies later affiliated with companion local graduate programs.
Dr. Coburn was born in an Ohio historic village to parents of English and Northern European descent. Her father was a trained electrical and chemical engineer with registered patents related to refrigeration and water purification, while her mother was an elementary school teacher well known for her experiment-oriented teaching style. After studying Latin and Spanish during her teenage years, Dr. Coburn attended Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, obtaining a bachelor's degree in Education and English, with minors in Spanish and Library Science. After graduating from college, she was invited to return as a faculty member. She later accepted a position at the American University in Thailand beginning a lifelong passion for international travel and study of others' cultures.
Throughout her life, Dr. Coburn's writings have been inspired by her travels and the people she meets. She is the author and literary awards recipient for "Angkat: The Cambodian Cinderella," "Jouanah: A Hmong Cinderella," "Domitila: A Cinderella Tale from the Mexican Tradition," "Enchanted Necklace," "Lani and the Secret of the Mountain," "Khmers, Tigers, and Talismans: From History and Legends of Mysterious Cambodia," "Encircled Kingdom: Legends and Folktales of Laos," "Beyond the East Wind: Legends and Folktales of Vietnam." Other standout works include two anthologies: "Authentic Voices: Women of Insight Talk about Real Life Challenges," coedited with Joyce Smith Helyer, and "Let the Clock Run Wild: Wit and Wisdom from Boomers and Bobbysoxers," co-edited with Judy Warner Scher.
Dr. Coburn is the recipient of a doctorate in higher education administration and honorary doctoral degrees of Laws and Humane Letters. She holds a Master's degree in English and writing from California Lutheran University. She received a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International, a Woman in Leadership Award from Taylor University. Other honors have included Projects and Research grants from the American Association for University Women. She was a select delegate to mainland China with American Women for International Understanding. In the coming years, Dr. Coburn continues her research in shared values worldwide and is currently completing her memoirs.
