Renowned for his pharmaceutical work, Dr. Zirvi was an experienced and dedicated professional and educator who spent more than 40 years in the industry. Just before retiring, he served as an Occupational Safety and Health Administration/good manufacturing practices training manager on behalf of Amneal Pharmaceutical Corporation in Paterson, New Jersey, between 2002 and 2009. Previously, Dr. Zirvi was a quality assurance manager at Health Guard Labs Inc. in Monsey, New York, from 2000 to 2001 and the co-director and technical supervisor at Molecular Medicine Inc., in Denville, New Jersey, between 1993 and 2000.
In addition to his fieldwork, Dr. Zirvi spent over a decade in academia, beginning as an assistant professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School, in Newark from 1982 and 1989 and subsequently as an associate professor between 1989 and 1993. During his tenure as a scholar, Dr. Zirvi also conducted extensive research in oncology.
During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Zirvi garnered expertise as a visiting scientist at the University of Louisville, as a research associate at the University of California at San Diego, and as a research associate in the chemistry department at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Before immigrating to the U.S., Dr. Zirvi was a research training fellow at the International Cancer Research Union in Heidelberg, Germany, taught at Ta'limul Islam High School in Ghatialian, Pakistan, was a senior research officer at the Pakistan Council of Science and Industrial Research Laboratories in Peshawar, and was an associate professor in the pharmacology department at Pahlavi University in Shiraz, Iran.
Widely published, Dr. Zirvi authored/co-authored more than 65 scholarly research articles and manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to numerous other professional publications and books on various religious topics in support of the peaceful and accurate representation of Islam. Dr. Zirvi's books include "Words of Wisdom: Welcome to the Ahmadiyya: The True Islam" in 2000, 2nd edition 2003, and "Invocations of the Holy Prophet of Islam" in 2005.
Choosing to pursue a career in cancer research, Dr. Zirvi was passionate about making a difference by treating and preventing cancer and improving people's lives. As a seasoned researcher, he was awarded a National Institutes of Health research grant, a Veterans Administration research grant, and a New Jersey State cancer research grant. Dr. Zirvi also secured a U.S. patent for a muscle relaxant.
Aside from his prominent professional career, Dr. Zirvi was active as the former secretary of the National Ta'lim and the former general secretary and vice president of the North Jersey Jama'at. He also served as an editor for several religious publications. Furthermore, Dr. Zirvi devoted much of his free time to charitable work, having visited numerous hospitals in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia and delivering surgical instruments and medicine to those in need from donations of physicians throughout the U.S.
Dr. Zirvi possessed a rich educational background, having earned a Bachelor of Science at Ta'limul Islam College in Rabwah, Pakistan, and a Bachelor of Education at Central Training College in Lahore, Pakistan. He subsequently acquired a Master of Science in chemistry at Karachi University in Karachi, Pakistan. After being awarded a Fulbright-Hays Award and a research grant from the University of Louisville in Kentucky, Dr. Zirvi completed a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology.
As a testament to his professional commitments, Dr. Zirvi was a respected member of numerous industry-related organizations, including as a member and past president of the Association of Ahmadi Muslim Scientists of the U.S. and as a member and former secretary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Medical Association of the U.S.
While teaching in Iran, Dr. Zirvi was awarded an International Cancer Research Technology Transfer Award from Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum in Heidelberg, Germany. Honoring his civic work, Dr. Zirvi and his late wife, Amatul Latif Zirvi, received an award in 2021 from Humanity First for donating water wells for clean drinking water in Africa.
Dr. Zirvi lived nearly all his life with his wife in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. He passed away on January 4, 2023.
